|---|---|---|---|

| decompression sickness | A disorder characterised by joint pains, respiratory manifestations, skin lesions, and neurologic signs, occurring in aviators flying at high altitudes and following rapid reduction of air pressure in persons who have been breathing compressed air in caissons and diving apparatus. (12 Dec 1998) |

| cardiac decompression | Incision into the pericardium or aspiration of fluid from pericardium to relieve pressure due to blood or other fluid in the pericardial sac. Synonym: pericardial decompression. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| rapid decompression | Sudden severe expansion of gases due to a reduction in ambient pressure. Synonym: explosive decompression. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cerebral decompression | Removal of a piece of the cranium, usually in the subtemporal region, with incision of the dura, to relieve intracranial pressure. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pericardial decompression | Incision into the pericardium or aspiration of fluid from pericardium to relieve pressure due to blood or other fluid in the pericardial sac. Synonym: pericardial decompression. (05 Mar 2000) |

| decompression | Decompression external to the body, most often the slow lessening of external pressure on the whole body (especially in caisson workers, deep sea divers, and persons who ascend to great heights) to prevent decompression sickness. It includes also sudden accidental decompression, but not surgical (local) decompression or decompression applied through body openings. (12 Dec 1998) |

| decompression sickness |
Also known as caisson disease, this involves the development of small bubbles in the arteries and veins. It is seen in SCUBA divers who ascend too rapidly after a deep or long dive. It was first reported in bridge workers who used pressurized caissons, or boxes, to build the bridge supports.

| decompression sickness |
Also referred to as DCS, a syndrome caused by bubbles of inert gas forming in the tissues and bloodstream during or after ascent from a dive. DCS is manifested in two major forms, DCS I and DCS II.

| decompression sickness |
DCS; a general term for all problems resulting from nitrogen leaving the body when ambient pressure is lowered. Can be divided into Type I (musculoskeletal and/or skin manifestations only) or the more serous Type II (neurologic, cardiac, and/or pulmonary manifestations).
