anterior crural nerve <anatomy, nerve> A nerve originating in the lumbar spinal cord (usually l2 to l4) and traveling through the lumbar plexus to provide motor innervation to extensors of the thigh and sensory innervation to parts of the thigh, lower leg, and foot, and to the hip and knee joints.
(12 Dec 1998)
anterior crural region The anterior surface of the inferior limb between the knee and the ankle.
Synonym: facies cruralis anterior, regio cruralis anterior, anterior crural region, anterior surface of leg, facies anterior cruris.
(05 Mar 2000)
medial crural cutaneous branches of saphenous nerve <anatomy, nerve> Branches of saphenous nerve distributed to the skin of the medial side of the leg.
Synonym: rami cutanei cruris mediales nervi sapheni.
(05 Mar 2000)
posterior crural region The back of the leg.
Synonym: regio cruralis posterior, posterior crural region, posterior surface of leg.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural Relating to the leg or thigh, or to any crus.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural arch <anatomy> A fibrous band formed by the thickened inferior border of the aponeurosis of the external oblique that extends from the anterior superior spine of the ilium to the pubic tubercle bridging, muscular and vascular lacunae;forms the floor of the inguinal canal; gives origin to the lowermost fibres of internal oblique and transversus abdominis muscles.
See: aponeurosis of external abdominal oblique muscle.
Synonym: ligamentum inguinale, arcus inguinalis, crural arch, fallopian arch, fallopian ligament, femoral arch, Poupart's ligament.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural fascia Fascia of the leg; it is continuous with the fascia lata and is attached proximally to the patella, ligamentum patellae, the tubercle and condyles of the tibia, and the head of the fibula; distally it is thickened to form the flexor and extensor retinacula.
Synonym: fascia cruris, deep fascia of leg, fascia of leg.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural fossa A depression on the peritoneal surface of the abdominal wall, inferior to the inguinal ligament, corresponding to the situation of the femoral ring.
Synonym: crural fossa, fovea femoralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural hernia <surgery> A common type of groin hernia which occurs most often in obese females. A groin mass (due to a loop of bowel) may be noted with coughing or straining.
If the hernia becomes incarcerated (trapped) it may strangulate (cut off the blood supply) and become a life threatening surgical emergency.
(27 Sep 1997)
crural interosseous nerve <anatomy, nerve> A nerve given off from one of the muscular branches of the tibial nerve which passes down over the posterior surface of the interosseous membrane supplying it and the two bones of the leg.
Synonym: nervus interosseus cruris, interosseous nerve of leg.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural ring The superior opening of the femoral canal, bounded anteriorly by the inguinal ligament, posteriorly by the pectineus muscle, medially by the lacunar ligament, and laterally by the femoral vein. Passageway by which many lymphatics from lower limb pass to abdomen. Accommodates enlargement of femoral vein in Valsalva manoeuvre. Often occupied by a lymph node (Cloquet's) and is the site of femoral hernias.
Synonym: annulus femoralis, crural ring.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural septum The delicate fibrous membrane that closes the femoral ring at the base of the femoral canal.
Synonym: septum femorale, Cloquet's septum, crural septum.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural sheath The fascia enclosing the femoral vessels, formed by the transversalis fascia anteriorly and the iliac fascia posteriorly; two septa divide the sheath into three compartments, the lateral of which contains the femoral artery and the femoral branch of the genitofemoral nerve, the middle the femoral vein, and the medial is the femoral canal.
Synonym: crural sheath, infundibuliform sheath.
(05 Mar 2000)
crural triangle An area of predilection for the petechial initial rash of smallpox; it occupies the lower abdominal, inguinal, and genital regions and the inner aspects of the thighs, the base of the triangle traversing the umbilicus.
(05 Mar 2000)
deep crural arch Thickened inferior margin of the transversalis fascia seen as a fibrous band running parallel and posterior (deep) to the inguinal ligament, contributing to the posterior wall of the inguinal canal as it bridges the external iliac-femoral vessels from the iliopectineal arch to the superior pubic ramus. It marks the inferior edge of the deep inguinal ring and the medial margin of the femoral canal. Seen only when the inguinal region is viewed from its internal aspect, it is a useful landmark in laparoscopy of this region, as for repair of inguinal herniae.
Synonym: deep crural arch, Thompson's ligament.
