| acute crescentic glomerulonephritis | <nephrology> A relatively uncommon (affecting 1 out of 10,000 people) form of acute glomerulonephritis that results in damage within the glomerulus of the kidney. There is rapid loss of kidney function with the formation of crescents on microscopic analysis (kidney biopsy). This disorder may result in acute glomerulonephritis or nephrotic syndrome, but ultimately results in renal failure and end-stage renal disease. Symptoms include smoky coloured urine (pyuria), decreased urine output, swelling and hypertension. Any conditions which can cause a vasculitis increase the risk of this disorder. Some examples include lupus, Goodpasture's syndrome, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, IgA nephropathy, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody disease, history for malignant tumours and exposure to hydrocarbon solvents. (27 Sep 1997) |

| Hutchinson's crescentic notch | The semilunar notch on the incisal edge of Hutchinson's teeth, encountered in congenital syphilis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cortical lobules of kidney | One of the subdivisions of the kidney, consisting of a medullary ray and that portion of the convoluted port (renal corpuscles and convoluted tubules) associated with its collecting duct. Synonym: lobulus corticalis renalis, renal cortical lobule, renculus, reniculus, renunculus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobules of epididymis | The coiled portion of the efferent ductules that constitute the head of the epididymis; these join the ductus epididymidis. Synonym: lobuli epididymidis, coni epididymidis, coni vasculosi, Haller's cones, vascular cones. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobules of mammary gland | Subdivisions of the lobes of the mammary gland. Synonym: lobuli glandulae mammariae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobules of testis | The subdivisions of the parenchyma of the testis formed by delicate fibrous septa that pass inward from the tunica albuginea to converge at the mediastinum testis. Synonym: lobuli testis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobules of thymus | Areas of thymic tissue 0.5 to 2 mm in diameter with a cortex and medulla. Synonym: lobuli thymi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lobules of thyroid gland | The subdivisions of the lobes, consisting of incompletely separated, irregular groups of thyroid follicles (20 to 40 in number) bound together by delicate connective tissue. Synonym: lobuli glandulae thyroideae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior notch of cerebellum | A wide, shallow notch on the anterior surface of the cerebellum occupied laterally by the superior cerebellar peduncles and the inferior quadrigeminal bodies medially. Synonym: anterior notch of cerebellum, incisura cerebelli anterior, semilunar notch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| veins of cerebellum | The veins draining the cerebellum. See: inferior veins of cerebellar hemisphere, superior veins of cerebellar hemisphere, petrosal vein, precentral cerebellar vein, inferior vein of vermis, superior vein of vermis. Synonym: venae cerebelli, veins of cerebellum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| central lobule of cerebellum | A division of the superior vermis of the cerebellum between the lingula and the monticulus. Synonym: lobulus centralis cerebelli, central lobule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cerebellum | <anatomy> Part of the vertebrate hindbrain, concerned primarily with somatic motor function, the control of muscle tone and the maintenance of balance. Important model for cell migration in developing mammalian brain owing to well studied migratory pathway of the granule neuron and to the existence of the neurological mutant mouse weaver in which granule cell migration fails. (18 Nov 1997) |
| granular layer of cerebellum | The deepest of the three layers of the cortex; it contains large numbers of granule cells, the dendrites of which synapse with incoming mossy fibres in cerebellar glomeruli. Thin, unmyelinated axons of granule cells ascend perpendicularly into the molecular layer in which they bifurcate into fibres coursing parallel to the long axis of the cerebellar folia. Parallel fibres form numerous synapses with the dendrites of Purkinje cells, basket cells, and stellate cells. Synonym: stratum granulosum cerebelli, granular layer of cerebellar cortex.
