| cranial roots | <anatomy, nerve> The roots of the accessory nerve which arise from the medulla; the nerve fibres of the cranial root join the intracranial portion of the vagus nerve and are distributed to the pharyngeal plexus, providing the motor innervation of the soft palate (except the tensor veli palati) and the pharynx. Synonym: pars vagalis nervi accessorii, radices craniales, accessory portion of spinal accessory nerve, cranial roots, vagal part of accessory nerve, vagal part. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| roots of olfactory tract | Lateral and medial, the two fibre bands that form the caudal continuation of the olfactory tract which, upon diverging, enclose the olfactory tubercle. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| roots of trigeminal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Collective term for the sensory root of trigeminal nerve and motor root of trigeminal nerve. Synonym: radices nervi trigemini. (05 Mar 2000) |
| motor roots of submandibular ganglion | <anatomy, nerve> Motor roots of submandibular ganglion; communicating branches between submandibular ganglion and lingual nerve. Synonym: rami communicantes ganglii submandibularis cum nervo linguali, motor roots of submandibular ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plant roots | The usually underground portions of a plant that serve as support, store food, and through which water and mineral nutrients enter the plant. (12 Dec 1998) |
| spinal nerve roots | The paired bundles of nerve fibres entering and leaving the spinal cord at each segment. The dorsal and ventral nerve roots join to form the mixed segmental spinal nerves. The dorsal roots are generally afferent, formed by the central projections of the spinal (dorsal root) ganglia sensory cells, and the ventral roots efferent, comprising the axons of spinal motor and autonomic preganglionic neurons. There are, however, some exceptions to this afferent/efferent rule. (12 Dec 1998) |
| olfactory roots | Three distinct fibre bands (stria medialis, stria intermedia, stria lateralis) that caudally extend the olfactory tract beyond its attachment to the olfactory trigone. The medial stria curves dorsally into the tenia tecta; the intermediate, often barely visible, extends straight back and terminates in the olfactory tubercle; the lateral olfactory stria, the largest of the three, passes along the lateral side of the olfactory tubercle, curving laterally as far as the limen insulae, then sharply medially to reach the uncus of the parahippocampal gyrus where it terminates in the plexiform layer of the olfactory cortex. See: medial longitudinal stria. Synonym: striae olfactoriae, olfactory roots. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior cranial base | The portion of the internal base of the skull, anterior to the sphenoidal ridges and limbus, in which the frontal lobes of the brain rest. Synonym: fossa cranii anterior, anterior cranial base. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior cranial fossa | The portion of the internal base of the skull, anterior to the sphenoidal ridges and limbus, in which the frontal lobes of the brain rest. Synonym: fossa cranii anterior, anterior cranial base. (05 Mar 2000) |
| attached cranial section | Craniotomy with a segment of the calvaria and attached soft tissues turned as a flap to expose the cranial cavity. Synonym: attached cranial section, osteoplastic craniotomy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| middle cranial fossa | A butterfly-shaped portion of the internal base of the skull posterior to the sphenoidal ridges and limbus and anterior to the crests of the petrous part of the temporal bones and dorsum sellae; it lodges the temporal lobes of the brain in the lateral portions, and the hypophysis centrally. Synonym: fossa cranii media. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cranial | <anatomy> Pertaining to the cranium or to the anterior (in animals) or superior (in humans) end of the body. Origin: L. Cranialis (18 Nov 1997) |
| cranial arteritis | <pathology> An inflammatory condition of the temporal artery. It is a serious chronic vascular disease, characterised by inflammation of the walls of the blood vessels (vasculitis). The age of affected patients is usually over 50 years of age. It most often involves the carotid artery system, and can lead to blindness or stroke. It can be diagnosed by biopsy of an artery, but there is often a false negative result. Elevation of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate is typical. Treatment is with high dose steroids. Common symptoms include headaches and tenderness over the temple (temporal artery). Can be associated with polymyalgia rheumatica. See: polymyalgia rheumatica. Synonym: cranial arteritis, temporal arteritis (20 Jun 2000) |
| cranial base | The sloping floor of the cranial cavity. It comprises both the external base of skull (external view) and the internal base of skull (internal view). See: internal base of skull. Synonym: basis cranii, cranial base. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cranial bones | The paired inferior nasal concha, lacrimal, maxilla, nasal, palatine, parietal, temporal, and zygomatic; and the unpaired ethmoid, frontal, occipital, sphenoid, and vomer. Synonym: ossa cranii, cranial bones. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cranial capacity | The cubic content of the skull obtained by determining the cubage of small shot, seeds, or beads required to fill the skull. (05 Mar 2000) |
