situs inversus <disease> Condition in which the normal asymmetry of the body (in respect of circulatory system and intestinal coiling) is reversed. Interesting because it occurs in approximately 50% of patients with immotile cilia syndrome, a disorder of ciliary dynein.
(10 Oct 1997)
situs inversus totalis A condition in which there is complete transposition (right to left reversal) of the thoracic and abdominal organs. The heart is not in its usual position in the left chest but is on the right. Specifically related to the heart, this is referred to as dextrocardia (literally, right-hearted). And the stomach, which is normally in the left upper abdomen, is on the right. In patients with situs inversus totalis, all of the chest and abdominal organs are reversed and appear in mirror image when examined or visualised by tests such as X-ray filming. Situs inversus totalis has been estimated to occur once in about 6-8,000 births. Situs inversus occurs in a rare abnormal condition that is present at birth (congenital) called kartagener's syndrome.
(12 Dec 1998)
situs inversus viscerum A transposition of the viscera, e.g., the liver developing on the left side or the heart on the right.
Synonym: visceral inversion.
(05 Mar 2000)
dextrocardia with situs inversus Displacement of the heart to the right side of the chest with mirror transposition of the cardiac chambers together with transposition of the abdominal viscera.
Synonym: type 1 dextrocardia.
(05 Mar 2000)
epicanthus inversus A crescentic upward fold of skin from the lower eyelid at the inner canthus; frequent in congenital blepharoptosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
congenital conus A congenital inferior crescent on the choroid at the edge of the optic disk; not associated with myopia.
Synonym: congenital conus.
(05 Mar 2000)
conus A genus of shellfish that inhabits the shores of some South Pacific islands. Several species, Conus geographus, Conus textilis, Conus aulicus, Conus tulipa, and Conus marmoreus are poisonous, their sting or spine causing acute pain, oedema, numbness, spreading paralysis, and sometimes coma and death.
(05 Mar 2000)
conus arteriosus The left or anterosuperior, smooth-walled portion of the cavity of the right ventricle of the heart, which begins at the supraventricular crest and terminates in the pulmonary trunk.
Synonym: arterial cone, pulmonary cone, pulmonary conus.
(05 Mar 2000)
conus elasticus Thicker lower portion of the elastic membrane of the larynx, extending between the cricoid cartilage and the vocal ligaments, the latter actually being a thickening of the free, superior margin of the conus elasticus.
Synonym: cricovocal membrane, elastic cone.
Synonym: cricothyroid ligament.
(05 Mar 2000)
conus medullaris The tapering lower extremity of the spinal cord.
Synonym: conus medullaris.
(05 Mar 2000)
myopic conus myopic crescent
pulmonary conus The left or anterosuperior, smooth-walled portion of the cavity of the right ventricle of the heart, which begins at the supraventricular crest and terminates in the pulmonary trunk.
Synonym: arterial cone, pulmonary cone, pulmonary conus.
(05 Mar 2000)
supertraction conus A reddish yellow conus or ring at the nasal margin of the optic disk, produced by displacement of the retinal pigment epithelium and lamina vitrea of the choroid; occurs in high myopia.
(05 Mar 2000)
distraction conus A conus in which the optic nerve passes through the scleral canal in a markedly oblique direction.
(05 Mar 2000)
