| 설명 | 적혈구의 기능은 산소를 운반하는데 있다. 적혈구 속에 산소와 결합을 하여 산소를 운반하는 혈색소라는 물질이 있다. 철은 이 혈색소의 중요한 부분을 이루는 것으로 철이 없으면 혈색소가 만들어질 수가 없다. 혈색소가 없으면 역시 적혈구도 만들어지지 않으므로 체내에 철이 부족하면 빈혈이 생긴다. 이 철결핍성 빈혈은 빈혈의 원인 중에서 가장 흔한 것이다(약 25%를 차지한다). 철저장량의 저하-결핍, 혈청철농도의 저하, 트란스페린량 상승, 트란스페린포화도의 저하, 혈색소농도 또는 헤마토크리트의 저하, 저색소성대적혈구를 특징으로 하는 빈혈로서, 생체 내에서 철이 장기에 걸쳐 결핍되며 그 때문에 혈색소 생산 감소에 의해 일어난다. 창자에서의 철흡수량 부족, 철의 수요 증대(유아기, 사춘기, 임신), 철소실과잉(출혈)에 의해 일어나며, 특히 사춘기에서 폐경기까지의 여성에게 많다. 증상으로서는 얼굴창백, 피로감, 피부창백, 손톱 변화(스푼 모양) 등을 나타낸다. 구강 영역에서는 혀의 접촉통, 발적, 건조감, 삼킴곤란을 수반하면 플러머-빈슨(Plummer-Vinson)증후군이라고 한다. 혈액 소견은 혈청철은 저하하며, 철결합능력의 상승, 저색소성 작은적혈구성을 나타낸다. |

| 설명 | 몸속에 들어온 병원 미생물에 대항하는 항체를 생산하여 독소를 중화하거나 병원 미생물을 죽여서 다음에는 그 병에 걸리지 않도록 된 상태. 또는 그런 작용. 병원성미생물 및 이종단백질, 다당체-지질 등의 침입, 또는 이형 수혈, 조직 이식 등, 폭넓게 자기 이외의 이물이 침입하였을 때 자기를 방위하는 생체반응을 말한다. 원래 일단 감염증에 걸리고 회복되면, 평생 그 병에 걸리지 않는 ‘재발하지 않는 현상’을 의미하였지만, 현재는 사람이나 동물이, 이물의 침입에 대해, 각각 대응한 항체를 생산하여 저항성을 얻는 상태를 말한다. 면역에는 태어나면서부터 갖고 있는 자연면역과, 생후 항원과 접하게 됨에 따라 얻어지는 획득면역이 있으며, 획득면역에는 능동면역과 수동면역이 있다. 능동면역에는 질병 회복 후에 얻어지는 병후 면역과 백신등에 의한 예방접종 결과로 얻어지는 인공적 방법이 있다. 수동면역은 면역항체를 갖는 혈청을 주사해서 얻을 수 있다. |

| 설명 | 면역이란 신체를 외부의 물질로부터 보호하는 행위를 말한다. 여기에는 특이적 면역과 비특이적 면역의 두 가지가 있다. 비특이적 면역이라함은 특정한 물질에 관계하는 면역이 아니라 특정 대상이 없이 모든 외부 물체에 작용할 수 있는 면역을 말한다. 여기에는 소변의 흐름, 눈물의 흐름, 피부의 비투과성 등의 기계적인 것도 포함되고 피속에 돌아다니는 세포 중에서 비특이적으로 외부의 물질을 포식하는 세포들(예를 들면 큰포식세포(macrophage)의 활동도 포함이 된다. 세포매개면역이란 특이한 물질을 감지할 수 있는 세포를 생성하게 하여 그것으로 하여금 그 물질을 포식하게 하는 것을 말한다. |

| 설명 | 배변장애, 복통, 복부팽만 등의 증상이 있으나 기질적인 병변이 없음이 확인된 예를 총망라한 임상 증후군이다. 가장 흔한 소화기 질환이며(전소화기 환자의 70~80%) 가장 흔한 질병(전체 인구의 약 20%)이다. 여성이 남성에 비해 2배 정도 많이 발생하며 30대 및 40대에서 호발하고 선진 공업국에서 많이 발생한다. 진단을 위해서는 병력 청취가 가장 중요하고 각종 검사로서 기질병을 제외해야 한다. 치료로는 안정요법(정신과적 면담 및 심리요법, 신경안정제), 식사요법(고섬유질 음식 섭취, 자극성 음식 피하기), 약물 요법(창자경련 진정제, 변비 완화제, 지사제) 등을 사용한다. |
