| coloboma of optic nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A congenital notch in the formation of the optic nerve, appearing as a craterlike excavation at the optic disk. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| depression of optic disk | The normally occurring depression or pit in the centre of the optic disc. Synonym: excavatio disci, depression of optic disk, excavatio papillae, physiologic cup, physiologic excavation. (05 Mar 2000) |
| optic disk | The portion of the optic nerve seen in the fundus with the ophthalmoscope. It is formed by the meeting of all the retinal ganglion cell axons as they enter the optic nerve. Because the retina at the optic disk has no photoreceptors there is a corresponding blind spot in the visual field. (12 Dec 1998) |
| optic disk drusen | Hyaline bodies occurring in the intra-ocular portion of the optic nerve. They are distinguished from retinal drusen, which lie beneath the retinal pigment epithelium. This disorder is differentiated also from papilledema by the absence of dilated retinal vessels. (12 Dec 1998) |
| macular coloboma | A defect of the central retina as a result of arrested development or intrauterine retinal inflammation. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coloboma | Congenital anomaly in which some of the structures of the eye are absent due to incomplete fusion of the foetal intraocular fissure during gestation. (12 Dec 1998) |
| coloboma iridis | Retention of the choroid fissure causing a congenital cleft of the iris, often associated with coloboma of the choroid, viable in the inferior ocular fundus, obsolete term for the iris defect resulting from a large surgical iridectomy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coloboma lentis | A segment of the lens equator devoid of zonular fibres, giving the appearance of a notch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coloboma lobuli | Congenital fissure of the lobule of the ear. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coloboma of choroid | A congenital defect of the choroid and retinal pigment epithelium exposing the sclera; the defect is usually situated below the optic disk in the region of foetal fissure. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coloboma of vitreous | A congenital indentation of the vitreous body by mesoderm; associated with severe myopia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| coloboma palpebrale | A congenital notch in the eyelid margin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Fuchs' coloboma | A congenital inferior crescent on the choroid at the edge of the optic disk; not associated with myopia. Synonym: congenital conus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acromioclavicular disk | The articular disk of fibrocartilage usually found between the acromial end of the clavicle and the medial border of the acromion. Synonym: discus articularis acromioclavicularis, acromioclavicular disk, Weitbrecht's cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Airy disk | <microscopy> The image of a bright point object as focused by a lens system. With monochromatic light, it consists of a central point of maximum intensity surrounded by alternate circles of light and darkness caused by the reinforcement and interference of diffracted rays. The light areas are called maxima and the dark areas minima. The distribution of light from the centre to the outer areas of the figure was investigated mathematically by Sir George Airy. The diffraction disk forms a basis for determining the resolving power of an ideal lens system. The diameter of the disk depends largely on the aperture of the lens. The diffraction of light causing the Airy disk is a factor limiting the resolution of a well corrected optical system. The bright disk of light (surrounded by alternating dark and bright diffraction rings)that is formed by a perfect diffraction-limited lens, focusing an image of an infinitely small source of light. For a minute absorbing spot, the diffraction pattern is a dark Airy disk surrounded by brighter and darker diffraction rings. Since the Airy disk is the smallest unit that makes up the image of a luminous or absorbing object (formed by a properly corrected microscope lens in focus), the radius of the disk determines the limit of resolution of the microscope. | coloboma of optic disk |
coloboma of optic nerve, 1. a coloboma, mild or severe, within or at the optic nerve head. A mild coloboma may be a separate, isolated entity, unilateral, and limited to minor cupping in the optic disk. A severe coloboma may be part of a bridge coloboma or part of a complete coloboma, or it may enlarge the optic disk two to four times and thus affect the adjacent retina and choroid. Nystagmus, strabismus, severe impairment of vision, microphthalmia, cyclopia, and anencephaly may be present. ...
