| 설명 | 망막의 구조를 직상검안경(망막을 보기 위해 고안된 검사기구)으로 보면 다음과 같다. 망막에 혈액을 공급하는 망막동맥(retinal artery)과, 다시 혈액을 회수하는 망막정맥(retinal vein)은 다같이 시각신경(optic nerve)과 함께 시각신경구멍(optic foramen)을 통해 망막까지 이르게 된다. 즉, 이들 망막 동, 정맥은 시각신경속에 끼워진 채 망막까지 이르게 된다. 따라서 이들 망막 동, 정맥 주위에 존재하는 시각신경유두는 바로 시각신경의 일부분을 말한다. 빛의 자극을 이해할 수 있는 신호체계로 바꾸는 시각세포는 받아들인 자극을 시각신경에서 분지한 수많은 신경절세포(ganglion cell: 신경전달을 모아서 보다 큰 전달단위로 전해주는 역할을 하며, 망막내에 위치한다)로 전달하게 되고, 이들 신경절세포는 다시 이런 자극들을 모아 시각신경유두로 보내게 되며, 시각신경유두에서부터 신경전달은 뇌까지 진행한다.  |

| 설명 | 척추동물에서 척주의 척추뼈 사이에 있는 원반처럼 생긴 척추뼈사이조직. 제2목뼈 이하 제5허리뼈와 엉치뼈바닥 사이에 있으며, 사람은 보통 23개이다. 개개의 원반은 중앙부가 가장 두껍다. 원반의 가쪽부는 결합조직과 섬유연골로 되어 있는 섬유테가 있고, 내부의 중앙은 연골세포군과 부드러운 섬유연골로 되어 있는 섬유테가 있고, 내부의 중앙은 연골세포군과 부드러운 섬유연골로 된 속질핵이 있으며, 여기에는 다량의 수분이 함유되어 있다. 척주의 부위에 따라서 원반의 두께가 다른데 등뼈가 가장 얇다. 이것은 그 구조상 강한 탄력성과 팽창성을 가지고 있으며, 척주의 굴신운동이나 척주를 중심으로 하는 몸의 지지에 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 이러한 척추원반이 외상을 받아서 섬유륜의 퇴행변성을 일으켜 속질핵이 헤르니아를 일으킨 것을 척추원반탈출증이라고 한다. 척주의 운동은 이 척추원반의 탄력성과 척주 뒷부분의 척추관절에 의하여 가능하게 된다. |

| Airy disk | <microscopy> The image of a bright point object as focused by a lens system. With monochromatic light, it consists of a central point of maximum intensity surrounded by alternate circles of light and darkness caused by the reinforcement and interference of diffracted rays. The light areas are called maxima and the dark areas minima. The distribution of light from the centre to the outer areas of the figure was investigated mathematically by Sir George Airy. The diffraction disk forms a basis for determining the resolving power of an ideal lens system. The diameter of the disk depends largely on the aperture of the lens.
