| cleft lip | <embryology, paediatrics> A genetic disorder that results in the failure of fusion in the upper lip. Also seen commonly in association with cleft palate. (13 Nov 1997) |
| cleft nose | A nose with a furrow where the bridge is normally present; due to failure of complete convergence of the paired primordia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cleft palate | <embryology, paediatrics> A congenital fissure in the roof of the mouth forming a communication between the nasal passages and the oral cavity. (13 Nov 1997) |
| cleft spine | See: spina bifida. (05 Mar 2000) |

| cleft uvula | The uvula, the little V-shaped fleshy mass hanging from the back of the soft palate, is cleft. Cleft uvula is a common minor anomaly occurring in about 1% of whites and 10% of Native Americans. Persons with a cleft uvula should not have their adenoids removed because, without the adenoids, they cannot achieve proper closure between the soft palate and pharynx while speaking and develop hypernasal speech. Also called bifid uvula. (12 Dec 1998) |
| anal cleft | The sulcus between the buttocks (nates). Synonym: crena ani, anal cleft, crena clunium, gluteal cleft. (05 Mar 2000) |

| brachial cleft cyst | A cervical cyst arising from the persistence of ectodermal brachial cleft (groove) or endodermal pharyngeal pouches. (27 Sep 1997) |
| branchial cleft cyst | Also called a branchial cyst, this is a cavity that is a remnant from embryologic development present at birth in one side of the neck just in front of the large angulated muscle on either side (the sternocleidomastoid muscle). The cyst may not be recognised until adolescence as it enlarges its oval shape. Sometimes it develops a sinus or drainage pathway to the surface of the skin from which mucus can be expressed. Total surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Recurrence is not expected. (12 Dec 1998) |
| palate, cleft | An opening in the roof of the mouth, due to a failure of the palatal shelves to come fully together from either side of the mouth and fuse during embryonic development. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Rathke's cleft cyst | An intrasellar or suprasellar cyst lined by cuboidal epithelium derived from remnants of Rathke's pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |

| residual cleft | The remnants of the pituitary diverticulum that occur between the pars distalis and pars intermedia; a distinct lumen is present in some animals, but, in humans, is present only during prenatal development and sometimes in young children. Synonym: residual lumen. (05 Mar 2000) |
