a severely pruritic papular eruption occurring in those who swim or wade in certain bodies of fresh or salt water, due to hypersensitivity to the cercariae of schistosomes in the water that penetrate the skin and die without gaining access to the circulation and deeper tissues, evoking an inflammatory reaction. Called also clam diggers' itch, cutaneous schistosomiasis, schistosome d., and swimmers' d. or itch.
