The process by which organic material in sedimentary rocks is thermally altered by increasing temperature resulting in the generation of oil and gas. Catagenesis covers the temperature range between diagenesis and metagenesis, approximately 50?to 200?C (122?to 392?F). The term was first used by NB Vassoevich, the "Father of Russian Geochemistry" and is widely used today.
