| calcitonin | <protein> A polypeptide hormone produced by C cells of the thyroid that causes a reduction of calcium ions in the blood. (18 Nov 1997) |
|---|---|
| calcitonin gene-related peptide | <protein> A second product transcribed from the calcitonin gene. Calcitonin gene related peptide is found in a number of tissues including nervous tissue. It is a vasodilator that may participate in the cutaneous triple response. It is a neuropeptide of 37 amino acids with structural homology to salmon calcitonin. Co-localises with substance P in neurons. It occurs as a result of alternative processing of mRNA from the calcitonin gene. The neuropeptide is widely distributed in neural tissue of the brain, gut, perivascular nerves, and other tissue. The peptide produces multiple biological effects and has both circulatory and neurotransmitter modes of action. In particular, it is a potent endogenous vasodilator. Intracerebral administration leads to a rise in noradrenergic sympathetic outflow, a rise in blood pressure and a fall in gastric secretion. Acronym: CGRP (05 May 2002) |
| receptors, calcitonin | Cell surface proteins that bind calcitonin and trigger intracellular changes which influence the behaviour of cells. Calcitonin receptors outside the nervous system mediate the role of calcitonin in calcium homeostasis. The role of calcitonin receptors in the brain is not well understood. (12 Dec 1998) |
| receptors, calcitonin gene-related peptide | Cell surface proteins that bind calcitonin gene-related peptide (cgrp) with high affinity and trigger intracellular changes which influence the behaviour of cells. Cgrp receptors are present in both the central nervous system and the periphery and are not the same as calcitonin receptors. (12 Dec 1998) |

| accessory nasal cartilages | Variable small plates of cartilage located in the interval between the greater alar and lateral nasal cartilages. Synonym: cartilagines nasales accessoriae, sesamoid cartilages of nose. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior nasal aperture | The anterior nasal opening in the skull. Synonym: apertura piriformis, piriform opening. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior nasal spine | A pointed projection at the anterior extremity of the intermaxillary suture; the tip, as seen on a lateral cephalometric radiograph, is used as a cephalometric landmark. Synonym: spina nasalis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| benign nasal tumour | A benign tumour of the posterior nasopharynx that is most common in adolescent boys. Symptoms repeated epistaxis, nasal congestion, nasal discharge and hearing loss. A skull X-ray or a CT scan of the head can confirm the presence of an angiofibroma. Treatment may include the surgical removal of the lesion if it is enlarging or blocking the airway. (27 Sep 1997) |
| bony nasal septum | The bones supporting the bony part of the nasal septum; these are the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, the vomer, the sphenoidal rostrum, the crest of the nasal bones, the frontal spine, and the median crest formed by the apposition of the maxillary and palatine bones. Synonym: septum nasi osseum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bony part of nasal septum | The major portion of the nasal septum supported by the vomer and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid. Synonym: pars ossea septi nasi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cartilage of nasal septum | A thin cartilaginous plate located between vomer, perpendicular plate of the ethmoid, and nasal bones, and completing the nasal septum anteriorly. Synonym: cartilago septi nasi, cartilage of nasal septum, cartilaginous septum, pars cartilaginea septi nasi, quadrangular cartilage, septal cartilage. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial nasal branches of anterior ethmoidal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branches of nasociliary nerve distributed to the nasal septum. Synonym: rami nasales mediales nervi ethmoidalis anterioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial nasal fold | An ectodermally covered mesenchymal swelling lying medial to the olfactory placode or pit in the embryo. Synonym: medial nasal fold, medial nasal primordium, medial nasal process. (05 Mar 2000) |
