| anterior limb of internal capsule | The portion of the internal capsule between the head of the caudate nucleus and the putamen; it lies anterior to the genu of the internal capsule. Synonym: crus anterius capsulae internae. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| retrolenticular limb of internal capsule | That portion of the capsule caudal to the lentiform nucleus which contains large parts of the optic or geniculocalcarine radiation and other fibre systems. Synonym: pars retrolentiformis capsulae internae, retrolenticular limb of internal capsule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior limb of internal capsule | That subdivision of the internal capsule caudal to the genu between the thalamus and lentiform nucleus. Synonym: crus posterius capsulae internae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sublenticular limb of internal capsule | The part of the internal capsule below the caudal third of the lentiform nucleus that contains the auditory radiation as well as that part of the optic radiation representing the upper part of the contralateral half of the binocular visual field. Synonym: pars sublentiformis capsulae internae, sublenticular limb of internal capsule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| genu of internal capsule | The obtuse angle, opening laterally in the horizontal plane, formed by the union of the two limbs (crus anterius and crus posterius) of the internal capsule. Synonym: genu capsulae internae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| retrolenticular part of internal capsule | That portion of the capsule caudal to the lentiform nucleus which contains large parts of the optic or geniculocalcarine radiation and other fibre systems. Synonym: pars retrolentiformis capsulae internae, retrolenticular limb of internal capsule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sublenticular part of internal capsule | The part of the internal capsule below the caudal third of the lentiform nucleus that contains the auditory radiation as well as that part of the optic radiation representing the upper part of the contralateral half of the binocular visual field. Synonym: pars sublentiformis capsulae internae, sublenticular limb of internal capsule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| internal capsule | <anatomy, neurology> A massive layer (8 to 10 mm thick) of white matter separating the caudate nucleus and thalamus (medial) from the more laterally situated lentiform nucleus (globus pallidus and putamen). It consists of 1) fibres ascending from the thalamus to the cerebral cortex that compose, among others, the visual, auditory, and somatic sensory radiations, and 2) fibres descending from the cerebral cortex to the thalamus, subthalamic region, midbrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord. The internal capsule is the major route by which the cerebral cortex is connected with the brainstem and spinal cord. Laterally and superiorly it is continuous with the corona radiata which forms a major part of the cerebral hemisphere's white matter; caudally and medially it continues, much reduced in size, as the crus cerebri which contains, among others, the pyramidal tract. On horizontal section it appears in the form of a V opening out laterally; the V's obtuse angle is called genu (knee). Its anterior and posterior limbs, respectively, the crus anterior and crus posterior. Synonym: capsula interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| internal capsule syndrome | <syndrome> Hemianopsia with contralateral hemianesthesia of the face. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral mammary branches of lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves | Branches arising from the lateral cutaneous branches of the ventral primary rami of spinal nerves (intercostal nerves) T-3 to T-6 which run anteriorly to supply the lateral aspect of the breast. Synonym: rami mammarii laterales rami cutanei lateralis nervorum thoracicorum, rami mammarii laterales rami cutanei lateralis nervorum intercostalium, lateral mammary branches of lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral mammary branches of lateral cutaneous branches of thoracic spinal nerves | Branches arising from the lateral cutaneous branches of the ventral primary rami of spinal nerves (intercostal nerves) T-3 to T-6 which run anteriorly to supply the lateral aspect of the breast. Synonym: rami mammarii laterales rami cutanei lateralis nervorum thoracicorum, rami mammarii laterales rami cutanei lateralis nervorum intercostalium, lateral mammary branches of lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior intercostal branches of internal thoracic artery | One of the arteries supplying the anterior portions of the intercostal spaces of the thoracic wall. Anterior intercostal arteries 1-6 arise as branches of the internal thoracic artery; 7-11 arise as branches of the musculophrenic artery. Synonym: rami intercostales anteriores, rami intercostalis anteriores arteria thoracica interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mediastinal branches of internal thoracic artery | <anatomy, artery> Small twigs supplying anterior mediastinal structures: mainly thymus and lymph nodes. Synonym: rami mediastinales arteriae thoracicae internae, rami thymici, anterior mediastinal arteries, arteriae thymicae, thymic arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| perforating branches of internal thoracic artery | <anatomy, artery> Small branches of the internal thoracic artery running between the costal cartilages to supply overlying skin and subcutaneous tissues. Synonym: ramus perforantes arteriae thoracicae internae, perforating arteries of internal mammary. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sternal branches of internal thoracic artery | <anatomy, artery> Branches of internal thoracic artery which pass medially to supply the transversus thoracis muscle and posterior sternum. Synonym: rami sternales arteriae thoracicae internae, sternal arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
