In words, the equation means that the concentration of a substance in moles is proportional to the absorption of a given wavelength of light by a solution of the substance. the ability of a penetrant to yield an indication depends primarily on its ability to fluoresce as a very thin film. The performance of penetrants based on the physical constraints of the dyes can be predicted using Beer's Law equation. This equation does not hold true when very thin layers are involved but works well to establish general relationships between variables. the absorbance (A) of a solution is directly proportional to the length of the light path (b) and the concentration (c); the proportionality constant is the molar absorptivity (ε) thus A = εbc. The absorptivity is independent of the concentration and is thus a property of the solute and solvent. Beer's law generally holds only up to a certain concentration, above which the relation between concentration and absorbance becomes nonlinear.
