| Reil's band | One of the trabeculae carneae in the right ventricle of the heart; it carries part of the right branch of the A-V bundle from the septum to the anterior papillary muscle on the opposite wall of the ventricle. Synonym: trabecula septomarginalis, moderator band, Reil's band. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Reil, Johann | <person> German physician, neurologist, and histologist, 1759-1813. See: Reil's ansa, Reil's band, Reil's ribbon, Reil's triangle, limiting sulcus of Reil, circular sulcus of Reil, island of Reil. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Reil's ansa | A complex fibre bundle curving around the medial edge of the internal capsule and connecting the anterior part of the temporal lobe (temporal cortex), amygdala, and olfactory cortex with the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus; it enters the thalamus as a component of the inferior thalamic peduncle which also contains a major part of the fibres connecting the mediodorsal nucleus to the orbitofrontal cortex. Synonym: peduncular ansa, peduncular loop, Reil's ansa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Reil's ribbon | A band of white fibres originating from the gracile and cuneate nuclei and decussating in the lower medulla; thence it passes upward through the centre of the medulla oblongata, close to the median raphe; on entering the pons it spreads out laterally to form a flat band ascending over the dorsal border of the pontine nuclei; in the mesencephalon it passes over the dorsal border of the substantia nigra and is displaced laterally by the red nucleus; passing medial to the medial geniculate body, the bundle enters and terminates in the ventral posterior nucleus of the thalamus. Throughout their course, the fibres retain a somatotopic order such that those originating from the gracile nucleus and representing the lower extremity lie lateral to those originating in the cuneate nucleus and representing the arm. The medial lemniscus conveys somatic-sensory information involved in tactile discrimination (two-point discrimination), position sense, and vibration sense. Synonym: lemniscus medialis, medial fillet, Reil's band, Reil's ribbon. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Reil's triangle | A triangular area on the lateral surface of the caudal half of the mesencephalon, bordered caudally by the slight prominence of the lateral lemniscus, dorsally by the base of the inferior colliculus and the brachium of the superior colliculus, and ventrally by the crus cerebri. Synonym: Reil's triangle, triangle of fillet, trigone of fillet, trigonum lemnisci. (05 Mar 2000) |
| circular sulcus of Reil | A saemicircular fissure demarcating the insula from the opercula above, below, and behind. Synonym: sulcus circularis insulae, circular sulcus of Reil, limiting sulcus of Reil. (05 Mar 2000) |
| island of Reil | 1. An oval region of the cerebral cortex overlying the extreme capsule, lateral to the lenticular nucleus, buried in the depth of the fissura lateralis cerebri (sylvian fissure). Synonym: insular area, insular cortex, island of Reil. Synonym: island. 3. Any circumscribed body or patch on the skin. Origin: L. Island (05 Mar 2000) |
| threshold of island of Reil | The band of transition between the anterior portion of the gray matter of the insula and the anterior perforated substance; it is formed by a narrow strip of olfactory cortex along the lateral side of the lateral olfactory stria. Synonym: threshold of island of Reil. (05 Mar 2000) |
| limiting sulcus of Reil | A saemicircular fissure demarcating the insula from the opercula above, below, and behind. Synonym: sulcus circularis insulae, circular sulcus of Reil, limiting sulcus of Reil. (05 Mar 2000) |
| absorption band | The range of wavelengths or frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum where radiant energy is absorbed by passage through a gaseous, liquid, or dissolved substance; it is exploited for analytical purposes in colourimetry or spectrophotometry, and is usually described in terms of the wavelength where maximum absorbance occurs (i.e., lambdamax). (05 Mar 2000) |
| amniotic band syndrome | <syndrome> A disorder present in the newborn infant in which constriction rings or bands, causing soft tissue depressions, encircle digits, extremities, or limbs and sometimes the neck, thorax, or abdomen. They may be associated with intrauterine amputations. (12 Dec 1998) |
| annular band | The strands of amniotic tissue adherent to the embryo or foetus; they may cause constriction of embryonic limbs. See: congenital amputation. Synonym: amniotic adhesions, annular band, constriction ring, Simonart's bands, Simonart's ligaments, Simonart's threads, Streeter's bands. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anogenital band | The first indication of the perineum in the embryo. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrioventricular band | The bundle of modified cardiac muscle fibres that begins at the atrioventricular node as the trunk of the atrioventricular bundle and passes through the right atrioventricular fibrous ring to the membranous part of the interventricular septum where the trunk divides into two branches, the right crus of the atrioventricular bundle and the left crus of the atrioventricular bundle; the two crura ramify in the subendocardium of their respective ventricles. Synonym: fasciculus atrioventricularis, atrioventricular band, Gaskell's bridge, His' band, His' bundle, bundle of His, Keith's bundle, Kent's bundle, Kent-His bundle, ventriculonector. (05 Mar 2000) |
| A-V band | The bundle of modified cardiac muscle fibres that begins at the atrioventricular node as the trunk of the atrioventricular bundle and passes through the right atrioventricular fibrous ring to the membranous part of the interventricular septum where the trunk divides into two branches, the right crus of the atrioventricular bundle and the left crus of the atrioventricular bundle; the two crura ramify in the subendocardium of their respective ventricles.
