the astroviruses; a family of RNA viruses having a nonenveloped spherical virion 2830 nm in diameter with a characteristic star-shaped outline. The genome consists of a single molecule of polyadenylated positive-sense single-stranded RNA (size 6.87.9 kb). Viruses contain four structural proteins and are chloroform-resistant. Infection is host restricted and transmission is by the fecal-oral route. There is a single genus, Astrovirus.
