| arrector pili | A microscopic band of muscle tissue which connects a hair follicle to the dermis. When stimulated, the arrector pili will contract and cause the hair to become more perpendicular to the skin surface (stand on end). (12 Dec 1998) |
| arrector pili muscles | Bundles of smooth muscle fibres, attached to the deep part of the hair follicles, passing outward alongside the sebaceous glands to the papillary layer of the corium; they act to pull the hairs erect, causing "goose bumps" or "goose flesh" (cutis anserina). Arrectores pilorum (singular Arrector pili) are tiny muscle fibers attached to each hair follicle, which contract to make the hairs stand on end. They are smooth muscle, not skeletal muscle, which explains why you can't voluntarily give yourself goose bumps. In other animals with more hair than humans, they serve an important function they raise the hairs so air gets trapped between them, providing a layer of insulation to keep the animal warm. ...
