anterolateral column of spinal cord The lateral white column of the spinal cord between the lines of exit and entrance of the anterior and posterior nerve roots.
Synonym: funiculus lateralis, anterolateral column of spinal cord, lateral funiculus of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
posterior column of spinal cord The pronounced, dorsolaterally oriented ridge of gray matter in each lateral half of the spinal cord, corresponding to the posterior or dorsal horn appearing in transverse sections of the cord.
Synonym: columna posterior, dorsal column of spinal cord, posterior column of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
posterior white column of the spinal cord The large wedge-shaped fibre bundle lying between the posterior gray column and the posterior median septum, and composed largely of dorsal root fibres.
Synonym: funiculus posterior, dorsal funiculus, funiculus dorsalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
dorsal column of spinal cord The pronounced, dorsolaterally oriented ridge of gray matter in each lateral half of the spinal cord, corresponding to the posterior or dorsal horn appearing in transverse sections of the cord.
Synonym: columna posterior, dorsal column of spinal cord, posterior column of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
intermediolateral cell column of spinal cord The cell column that forms the lateral horn of the spinal cord's gray matter. Extending from the first thoracic through the second lumbar segment, the column contains the autonomic motor neurons that give rise to the preganglionic fibres of the sympathetic system.
Synonym: intermediolateral cell column of spinal cord, nucleus intermediolateralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
lateral column of spinal cord A slight protrusion of the gray matter of the spinal cord into the lateral funiculus of either side, especially marked in the thoracic region where it encloses preganglionic motor neurons of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system; it corresponds to the lateral horn appearing in transverse sections of the spinal cord.
See: gray columns.
Synonym: columna lateralis, lateral column of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior median fissure of spinal cord A deep median fissure on the anterior surface of the spinal cord.
Synonym: fissura mediana anterior medullae spinalis, anteromedian groove, sulcus ventralis.
(05 Mar 2000)
spinal column The series of vertebrae that extend from the cranium to the coccyx, providing support and forming a flexible bony case for the spinal cord.
Synonym: columna vertebralis, backbone, dorsal spine, rachis, spina dorsalis, spina, spina, spinal column, spine, vertebrarium.
(05 Mar 2000)
acute spinal cord compression <radiology> Signs and symptoms of cord compression show progression within 24 hours or less: pain, weakness, autonomic dysfunction, sensory loss, ataxia Diagnostic considerations: Primary or secondary malignancy of epidural space or vertebrae, Trauma, Inflammatory process, Osteoarthritis REF: MacNeil BJ, Abrams HL. Brigham and Women's Hospital Handbook of Diagnostic Imaging. Chapter 35.
(12 Dec 1998)
arachnoid of spinal cord That portion of the arachnoid which lies within the vertebral canal and surrounds the spinal cord and the vertebral portion of the subarachnoid space. It extends from the foramen magnum above to the S-2 vertebral level. Since the spinal cord ends at the L-2 vertebral level, a wide separation occurs between the arachnoid and pia mater, the lumbar cistern, filled with cerebrospinal fluid in which the cauda equina is suspended.
Synonym: arachnoidea mater spinalis, spinal part of arachnoid.
(05 Mar 2000)
glioma of the spinal cord A glial tumour of the spinal cord, commonly an ependymoma; neoplasms of the spinal cord are relatively rare, but glioma's constitute approximately one-fourth of the total.
(05 Mar 2000)
central canal of spinal cord The ependyma-lined lumen (cavity) of the neural tube, the cerebral part of which remains patent to form the ventricles of the brain, while the spinal part in the adult often is reduced to a solid strand of modified ependyma.
Synonym: canalis centralis medullae spinalis, central canal of spinal cord, tubus medullaris.
Synonym: syringocele.
(05 Mar 2000)
cervical enlargement of spinal cord A spindle-shaped swelling of the spinal cord extending from the third cervical to the second thoracic vertebra, with maximum thickness opposite the fifth or sixth cervical vertebra, consequential to the innervation of the upper limb.
Synonym: intumescentia cervicalis, cervical enlargement of spinal cord.
(05 Mar 2000)
cervical part of spinal cord The part of the spinal cord that consists of the eight cervical segments and gives rise to the first eight pairs of spinal nerves.
Synonym: pars cervicalis medullae spinalis.
(05 Mar 2000)
cervical segments of spinal cord The eight cervical segments [C1-C8] of the spinal cord which give rise to the eight pairs of cervical spinal nerves and constitute the cervical part of the spinal cord.
Synonym: segmenta medullae spinalis cervicalia.
