| amphibole | <chemical> A common mineral embracing many varieties varying in colour and in composition. It occurs in monoclinic crystals; also massive, generally with fibrous or columnar structure. The colour varies from white to gray, green, brown, and black. It is a silicate of magnesium and calcium, with usually aluminium and iron. Some common varieties are tremolite, actinolite, asbestus, edenite, hornblende (the last name being also used as a general term for the whole species). Amphibole is a constituent of many crystalline rocks, as syenite, diorite, most varieties of trachyte, etc. See Hornblende. Origin: Gr. Doubtful, equivocal, fr. To throw round, to doubt: cf. F. Amphibole. Hauy so named the genus from the great variety of colour and composition assumed by the mineral. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| asbestos, amphibole | <chemical> A class of asbestos that includes silicates of magnesium, iron, calcium, and sodium. The fibres are generally brittle and cannot be spun, but are more resistant to chemicals and heat than asbestos, serpentine. Pharmacological action: carcinogens. (12 Dec 1998) |

| amphibole asbestos |
Amphibole defines an important group of dark-colored rock-forming inosilicate minerals composed of double chain SiO4 tetrahedra linked at the vertices and generally containing ions of iron and/ or magnesium in their structures. In chemical composition and general characteristics they are very similar to the pyroxenes and, like them, fall into three series according to their system of crystallization. ...

| amphibole a. |
one of the two major classes of asbestos, characterized by fibers too brittle to be spun but more resistant to chemicals and heat than the serpentine form. It is less widely used than serpentine asbestos and is thought to be much more carcinogenic. The group includes amosite and crocidolite.
