| 설명 | 사후에 일어나는 근육의 경화. 근육이 굳어져 관절 등이 고정되어 움직일 수 없게 된다. 원인은 근육 내의 아데노신삼인산(ATP)의 분해-소실에 의한 것으로 추측한다. 튼튼한 근육일수록, 죽기 직전에 고도로 사용된 근육일수록 경직이 강하게 일어나며, 신경이 마비되어 있는 근육이나 건강해도 발달이 나쁜 여자나 어린이의 근육은 경직이 약하게 일어난다. 골격근에 한하지 않고, 창자나 방광 등의 민무늬근이나 양자의 중간적인 심장근 등에서도 경직이 일어난다. 보통 사후 1~2시간경부터 턱-목덜미 등 상부 관절에서 시작되어 어깨-팔꿈치-팔-무릎-발목 관절의 순서로, 대체로 위에서 아래로 퍼진다고 하지만 예외도 많다. 심장근은 30분 전후에서 경직이 시작된다. 경직은 여름에는 1~2일, 겨울에는 3~4일이면 완해된다. 이것은 온도가 높으면 완해에 관계하는 단백질의 분해가 빨리 진행되기 때문이다. 가로무늬근의 경직완해는 빠르게 진행된다. 죽는 순간에 심한 정신 긴장상태가 있으면, 그 시점의 근육수축 상태가 그대로 시체경직으로 이행되는 수가 있다. 이것을 강경성 시체경직이라고 한다. 권총 자살자가 권총을 손에 쥔 채로 발견되는 것은 좋은 예이다. |

| mortis | 1. The cessation of all vital phenomena without capability of resuscitation, either in animals or plants. Local death is going on at times and in all parts of the living body, in which individual cells and elements are being cast off and replaced by new; a process essential to life. General death is of two kinds; death of the body as a whole (somatic or systemic death), and death of the tissues. By the former is implied the absolute cessation of the functions of the brain, the circulatory and the respiratory organs; by the latter the entire disappearance of the vital actions of the ultimate structural constituents of the body. When death takes place, the body as a whole dies first, the death of the tissues sometimes not occurring until after a considerable interval. Death is much used adjectively and as the first part of a compound, meaning, in general, of or pertaining to death, causing or presaging death; as, deathbed or death bed; deathblow or death blow, etc. Black death. Civil death, the separation of a man from civil society, or the debarring him from the enjoyment of civil rights, as by banishment, attainder, abjuration of the realm, entering a monastery, etc. Death adder. <zoology> A kind of viper found in South Africa (Acanthophis tortor); so called from the virulence of its venom. A venomous Australian snake of the family Elapidae, of several species, as the Hoplocephalus superbus and Acanthopis antarctica. Death applies to the termination of every form of existence, both animal and vegetable; the other words only to the human race. Decease is the term used in law for the removal of a human being out of life in the ordinary course of nature. Demise was formerly confined to decease of princes, but is now sometimes used of distinguished men in general; as, the demise of Mr. Pitt. Departure and release are peculiarly terms of Christian affection and hope. A violent death is not usually called a decease. Departure implies a friendly taking leave of life.
