| adrenal hermaphroditism | Altered appearance of the genitalia due to disorders of adrenocortical function, most often female virilization; not an example of true hermaphroditism. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| bilateral hermaphroditism | True hermaphroditism with an ovotestis on both sides. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| male hermaphroditism | More correctly designated as male pseudohermaphroditism, as the term is commonly used; however, it may designate an instance of true hermaphroditism in which overt bodily characteristics are predominantly male. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hermaphroditism | <biology> The union of the two sexes in the same individual, or the combination of some of their characteristics or organs in one individual. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| dimidiate hermaphroditism | A form in which a testis is present on one side and an ovary on the other. Synonym: dimidiate hermaphroditism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transverse hermaphroditism | Pseudohermaphroditism in which the external genitalia are characteristic of one sex and the gonads are characteristic of the other sex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| true hermaphroditism | Hermaphroditism in which both ovarian and testicular tissue are present. Somatic characteristics of both sexes are present; also called true intersex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| false hermaphroditism | A condition in which the gonads are of one sex but one or more contradictions exist in the morphologic criteria of sex. Female pseudohermaphroditism is a form in which the affected individual is a genetic and gonadal female with partial masculinization. Male pseudohermaphroditism is a form in which the affected individual is a genetic and gonadal male with incomplete masculinization. (12 Dec 1998) |
| unilateral hermaphroditism | Hermaphroditism in which the doubling of sex characteristics occurs on one side only: ovotestis on one side and either ovary or testis on the other. (05 Mar 2000) |
| female hermaphroditism | More correctly female pseudohermaphroditism, as the term is commonly used; however, it may designate true hermaphroditism, in which overt bodily characteristics are predominantly female. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral hermaphroditism | A form in which a testis is present on one side and an ovary on the other. Synonym: dimidiate hermaphroditism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| accessory adrenal | An island of cortical tissue separate from the adrenal gland, usually found in the retroperitoneal tissues, kidney, or genital organs. Synonym: adrenal rest. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute adrenal crisis | <endocrinology> An abrupt life-threatening state which is caused by insufficient production of cortisol by the adrenal gland. A typical finding in Addison's disease. Individuals who have been taking corticosteroids (glucocorticoids) for a prolonged period of time (weeks to months) are at risk for acute adrenal crisis if the medication is stopped abruptly. For this reason, corticosteroid medication are withdrawn slowly on a diminishing dosing schedule. Symptoms include low blood pressure (shock), weakness, headache, vomiting, fever chills, tachycardia and sweating. Treatment includes blood pressure support and intravenous hydrocortisone. (27 Sep 1997) |
| adenoma, adrenal cortical | A benign neoplasm of adrenal cortical cells resembling normal adrenal cells histologically but possessing functional autonomy. In general it does not exceed 5 cm in its largest dimension, although benign tumours exceeding 20 cm have been reported. Adrenal cortical adenomas produce hypercortisolism and hyperaldosteronism, but seldom produce adrenogenital syndromes. For the most part the prognosis after surgery is reasonably favourable. (12 Dec 1998) |
