| acute haemorrhagic encephalitis | Encephalitis of apoplectoid character due to blood extravasation. Synonym: encephalitis haemorrhagica. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|
| acute inclusion body encephalitis | The most common acute encephalitis, caused by HSV-1; affects persons of any age; preferentially involves the inferomedial portions of the temporal lobe and the orbital portions of the frontal lobes; pathologically, severe haemorrhagic necrosis is present along with, in the acute stages, intranuclear eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons and glial cells. Synonym: acute inclusion body encephalitis, herpes encephalitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| acute necrotizing encephalitis | An acute form of encephalitis, characterised by destruction of brain parenchyme. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis | Specific acute endemic conjunctivitis with eyelid swelling, tearing, conjunctival haemorrhages, and follicles; usually caused by Enterovirus type 70. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute haemorrhagic glomerulonephritis | <nephrology> A disease of the kidneys that results in inflammation of the glomerulus (the portion of the kidney that filters the blood). Conditions which may cause glomerulonephritis include post-streptococcal disease (strep throat), lupus, syphilis, bacterial endocarditis, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, sepsis, vasculitis, Goodpasture's syndrome, typhoid fever, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, hepatitis or a viral infection (for example mumps, measles, mononucleosis). (27 Sep 1997) |
| acute haemorrhagic leukoencephalitis | A fulminating demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system that affects mainly children and young adults. Almost always preceded by a respiratory infection, characterised by the abrupt onset of fever, headache, confusion, and nuchal rigidity, soon followed by focal seizures, hemiplegia, or quadriplegia, brainstem findings, and coma; the CSF shows evidence of an inflammatory process; due to the massive destruction of the white matter of one or both hemispheres, often accompanied by similar destruction of the white matter of the brainstem and cerebellar peduncles; of unknown aetiology. Synonym: acute haemorrhagic leukoencephalitis, acute necrotizing haemorrhagic leukoencephalitis. (05 Mar 2000) |

(05 Mar 2000) |
| acute primary haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis | A disease characterised by acute onset of fever, followed by convulsions, delirium, and coma, and associated with perivascular demyelination and haemorrhagic foci in the central nervous system. Synonym: acute primary haemorrhagic meningoencephalitis, Strumpell's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| conjunctivitis, acute haemorrhagic | A highly contagious disease characterised by subconjunctival haemorrhage, sudden swelling of the eyelids and congestion, redness, and pain in the eye. Epidemic conjunctivitis caused by enterovirus 70 (ev-70) was first described in africa in 1969. It is caused also by coxsackie virus a24 variant (ca24v). Epidemics by this organism have appeared most frequently in asia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| infantile acute haemorrhagic oedema of the skin | A generally benign form of cutaneous vasculitis, characterised by ecchymotic purpura, often in a cockade pattern, and inflammatory oedema in infants. (05 Mar 2000) |
| leukoencephalitis, acute haemorrhagic | A rare, fatal postinfection or allergic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system having a fulminating course and occurring mainly in young adults. It is characterised by destruction of white matter to the point of liquefaction; widespread necrosis of blood vessel walls leading to the formation of multiple small haemorrhages in the involved areas and the exudation of fibrin into the surrounding tissue; and cellular infiltration of the necrotic areas. (12 Dec 1998) |
| arthritis-encephalitis virus, caprine | A species of lentivirus, subgenus ovine-caprine lentiviruses (lentiviruses, ovine-caprine), closely related to visna-maedi virus and causing acute encephalomyelitis, chronic arthritis, pneumonia, mastitis, and glomerulonephritis in goats. It is transmitted mainly in the colostrum and milk. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Australian X encephalitis | A severe encephalitis with a high mortality rate occurring in the Murray Valley of Australia; the disease is most severe in children and is characterised by headache, fever, malaise, drowsiness or convulsions, and rigidity of the neck; extensive brain damage may result; it is caused by the Murray Valley encephalitis virus (genus Flavivirus). Synonym: Australian X disease, Australian X encephalitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bacterial encephalitis | Encephalitis of bacterial aetiology. Synonym: encephalitis pyogenica, purulent encephalitis, suppurative encephalitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| bovine spongiform encephalitis | <pathology> A neuro-degenerative disease found in domestic cattle which is related to a number of other similar diseases found in other animal species, including humans. The most well-known of these other diseases are scrapie, found in sheep, and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, found in humans. The family of diseases is caused by an abnormally-configured protein called a prion. The function of the protein in its normal configuration is not certain. The diseases are similar to Alzheimer's disease in humans, except the progressive loss of brain function is more rapid. (09 Oct 1997) |
