| gel diffusion precipitin tests in two dimensions | Precipitin test's made in a layer of agar that permits radial diffusion, in both of the horizontal dimensions, of one or both reactants. Double (gel) diffusion in two dimensions (Ouchterlony test, technique, or method) incorporates antigen and antibody solutions placed in separate wells in a sheet of plain agar, permitting radial diffusion of both reactants; this method is widely used to determine antigenic relationships; the bands of precipitate that form where the reactants meet in optimal concentration are of three patterns, referred to as reaction of identity, reaction of partial identity (cross-reaction), and reaction of nonidentity. | pelvic plane of greatest dimensions | The plane extending from the middle of the posterior surface of the pubic symphysis to the junction of the second and third sacral vertebrae, and laterally passing through the ischial bones over the middle of the acetabulum. Synonym: second parallel pelvic plane, wide plane. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pelvic plane of least dimensions | The plane that extends from the end of the sacrum to the inferior border of the pubic symphysis; it is bounded posteriorly by the end of the sacrum, laterally by the ischial spines, and anteriorly by the inferior border of the pubic symphysis. Synonym: midplane, plane of least pelvic dimensions, plane of midpelvis, third parallel pelvic plane. (05 Mar 2000) |
| plane of least pelvic dimensions | The plane that extends from the end of the sacrum to the inferior border of the pubic symphysis; it is bounded posteriorly by the end of the sacrum, laterally by the ischial spines, and anteriorly by the inferior border of the pubic symphysis. Synonym: midplane, plane of least pelvic dimensions, plane of midpelvis, third parallel pelvic plane. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abnormal | Not normal, contrary to the usual structure, position, behaviour or rule. (06 Oct 1997) |
| abnormal cleavage of cardiac valve | Congenital malformation of a valve leaflet with a defect extending from the free margin. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abnormal correspondence | Abnormal correspondence, a condition, frequent in strabismus, in which corresponding retinal points do not have the same visual direction; the fovea of one eye corresponds to an extrafoveal area of the fellow eye. Synonym: abnormal correspondence. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abnormal occlusion | An arrangement of the teeth which is not considered to be within the normal range of variation. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abnormal placental size | <radiology> TOO BIG (greater than5cm in sections obtained at right angles to the long axis), maternal disease, diabetic mothers (= villous oedema), intrauterine infections, anaemic mothers (= normal histology), foetal disease, erythroblatosis foetalis (= villous oedema and hyperplasia), umbilical vein obstruction, foetal high output failure, large chorioangioma, sacrococcygeal teratoma, arteriovenous fistula too small, preeclampsia (associated with placental infarcts in 33-60%) (12 Dec 1998) |
| reflex, abnormal | Abnormal, involuntary response to a stimulus which includes hyperreflexia, hyporeflexia, and areflexia. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cellular immunodeficiency with abnormal immunoglobulin synthesis | An ill-defined group of sporadic disorders of unknown cause, occurring in both males and females and associated with recurrent bacterial, fungal, protozoal, and viral infections; there is thymic hypoplasia with depressed cellular (T-lymphocyte) immunity combined with defective humoral (B-lymphocyte) immunity, although immunoglobulin levels may be normal. Synonym: Nezelof syndrome, Nezelof type of thymic alymphoplasia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| haemoglobins, abnormal | Haemoglobins altered in their genetically determined molecular structure, resulting in a characteristic complex of vlinival and laboratory abnormalities. The specific features of the abnormal haemoglobins are related to variation of the composite globin polypeptide chains. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pupillary functions, abnormal | Conditions in which the pupil does not react normally to dilation and constriction. Signs of pupillary abnormalities originate from the pupil's shape, position, and response to stimulation. (12 Dec 1998) |
| fibrinogens, abnormal | Fibrinogens which have a functional defect as the result of one or more amino acid substitutions in the amino acid sequence of normal fibrinogen. Abnormalities of the fibrinogen molecule may impair any of the major steps involved in the conversion of fibrinogen into stabilised fibrin, such as cleavage of the fibrinopeptides by thrombin, polymerization and cross-linking of fibrin. The resulting dysfibrinogenaemias can be clinically silent or can be associated with bleeding, thrombosis or defective wound healing. (12 Dec 1998) |
| air chamber | 1. A chamber or cavity filled with air, in an animal or plant. 2. A cavity containing air to act as a spring for equalizing the flow of a liquid in a pump or other hydraulic machine. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
