Western blotting <molecular biology> An electroblotting method in which proteins are transferred from a gel to a thin, rigid support (nitrocellulose) and detected by binding of labelled antibody.
See: blots.

blotting, western Identification of proteins or peptides that have been electrophoretically separated by blotting and transferred to strips of nitrocellulose paper. The blots are then detected by radiolabelled antibody probes.
(12 Dec 1998)
blotting <molecular biology, procedure> General term for the transfer of protein, RNA or DNA molecules from a relatively thick acrylamide or agarose gel or to a paper like membrane (usually nylon or nitrocellulose) by capilliarity or an electric field, preserving the spatial arrangment. Once on the membrane, the molecules are immobilised, typically by baking or by ultra violet irradiation and can then be detected at high sensitivity by hybridisation (in the case of DNA & RNA) or antibody labelling (in the case of protein). RNA blots are called Northern blots, DNA blots, Southern, protein blots, Western.
(18 Nov 1997)
blotting, northern Detection of RNA that has been electrophoretically separated and immobilised by blotting on nitrocellulose or other type of paper or nylon membrane.
(12 Dec 1998)
blotting, southern A method (first developed by e.m. Southern) for detection of DNA that has been electrophoretically separated and immobilised by blotting on nitrocellulose or other type of paper or nylon membrane.
(12 Dec 1998)
Southern blotting <molecular biology, procedure> General term for the transfer of protein, RNA or DNA molecules from a relatively thick acrylamide or agarose gel or to a paper like membrane (usually nylon or nitrocellulose) by capilliarity or an electric field, preserving the spatial arrangment. Once on the membrane, the molecules are immobilised, typically by baking or by ultra violet irradiation and can then be detected at high sensitivity by hybridisation (in the case of DNA & RNA) or antibody labelling (in the case of protein). RNA blots are called Northern blots, DNA blots, Southern, protein blots, Western.

asia, western The geographical designation for the countries of the middle east and the countries bangladesh, bhutan, india, nepal, pakistan, and sri lanka.
(12 Dec 1998)
blot, western A technique in molecular biology, used to separate and identify proteins. Called a Western blot merely because it has some similarity to a Southern blot (which is named after its inventor, the British biologist M.E. Southern).
(12 Dec 1998)
western 1. Of or pertaining to the west; situated in the west, or in the region nearly in the direction of west; being in that quarter where the sun sets; as, the western shore of France; the western ocean. "Far o'er the glowing western main." (Keble)

western equine encephalomyelitis An equine encephalomyelitis found in the western U.S. And parts of South America, transmitted by mosquitoes and caused by the western equine encephalomyelitis virus (a species of Alphavirus in the family Togaviridae); the infection is similar to but milder than eastern equine encephalomyelitis in man and is, as a rule, inapparent, but some cases with central nervous system involvement have been fatal.
(05 Mar 2000)
western equine encephalomyelitis virus A group A arbovirus of the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae, occurring in the western United States and parts of South America; it occurs naturally, usually as a symptomless infection in birds, but causes western equine encephalomyelitis in horses and humans following transfer by the bites of mosquitoes, chiefly Culex tarsalis.
Synonym: WEE virus.
