a family of gram-negative, anaerobic, coccoid bacteria occurring in pairs and short chains. They are asporogenous nonmotile organisms found in the alimentary tract of humans, ruminants, rodents, and pigs. The family includes the genera Acidaminococcus, Megasphaera, and Veillonella; only Veillonella is of medical importance.
