| VDRL | <microbiology> A blood test used to diagnose syphilis. Read as nonreactive or negative if you do not have syphilis. The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory can also be positive is cases of leprosy, malaria, mononucleosis, lupus, hepatitis A and pregnancy. Positive Venereal Disease Research Laboratory tests are usually followed up by a more specific test (FTA antibodies). (12 Jan 1998) |
|---|---|
| VDRL test | A flocculation test for syphilis, using cardiolipin-lecithin-cholesterol antigen as developed by the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory of the United States Public Health Service. (05 Mar 2000) |
| VDRL |
Venerial Disease Research Laboratory slide test microscopically detects antilipid "reagenic" antibodies of syphilitic infection. False positives can occur in leprosy, infectious mononucleosis, autoimmune disorders and increasing age.

| VDRL a. |
an alcohol solution containing 0.03 per cent cardiolipin, 0.99 per cent cholesterol, and enough lecithin to produce standard reactivity. See VDRL test, under test.

|
| VDRL t. |
the standard nontreponemal antigen serologic test for syphilis, a slide flocculation test using heat-inactivated serum and VDRL antigen, a standardized mixture of cardiolipin, lecithin, and cholesterol. Positive tests are seen in about 70 per cent of cases in primary syphilis, 100 per cent in secondary syphilis, and 70 per cent in tertiary syphilis. There is a 20 to 40 per cent false positive rate.
