(for hydrochloric acid and lactic acid in the gastric contents): to a quantity of material taken from the stomach add a few drops of a reagent containing 3 drops of a solution of ferric chloride, 3 drops of a concentrated solution of phenol, and 20 mL of water; hydrochloric acid, if present, decolorizes this solution, while lactic acid turns it yellow.
