[USP] an antidyskinetic with a direct antispasmodic effect on smooth muscle; believed to act by partially blocking central cholinergic receptors, so that cholinergic and dopaminergic activity in the basal ganglia is more balanced. It is used in the treatment of parkinsonism and for the control of drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (except tardive dyskinesia), administered orally.
