a system of transverse tubular invaginations (T, or transverse, tubules) of the sarcolemma, each of which penetrates deep into the muscle fiber. In mammalian skeletal muscle, they are located at the junction of the A band with the I band, and in mammalian cardiac muscle at the level of the Z band; the system plays a role in the excitation and relaxation of muscle and provides an important additional surface for the exchange of metabolites between muscle and the extracellular space. Called also triad s. See also triad of skeletal muscle; terminal cisterns, under cistern; and T tubule, under tubule.
