| binomial nomenclature | <biology, ecology> The system of having two names (genus and specific epithet, also called Latin binomial) for each organism. (09 Oct 1997) |
| Cleland nomenclature | A nomenclature for representing the binding mechanisms of enzyme-catalyzed reactions; in this nomenclature, substrates are represented by the letters A, B, C, etc., while products are represented by P, Q, R, etc., enzyme by E, and modified forms of the enzyme by F, G, etc.; in addition, the number of substrates or products is represented by uni, bi, ter, etc.; thus, an aminotransferase reaction (e.g., alanine transaminase) has a ping-pong bi bi mechanism; glutamine synthetase has been reported to have a random ter ter mechanism.subentries under mechanism. With minor exceptions it retains the same format as the first two editions. Minor amendments for immediate incorporation are published in Bulletin Zoological Nomenclature as Declarations to remain in force until ratified or rejected by future congresses. (09 Jan 1998) |
