| sticky ends | The short stretches of single stranded DNA produced by cutting DNA with restriction endonucleases whose site of cleavage is not at the axis of symmetry. The cut generates two complementary sequences that will hybridise (stick) to one another or to the sequences on other DNA fragments produced by the same restriction endonuclease. (18 Nov 1997) |

| cancer, colon: screening and surveillance | Colon cancer is both preventable and curable. It is preventable by removing precancerous colon polyps. It is curable if early cancer is surgically removed before cancer spread to other parts of the body. Therefore, if screening and surveillance programs were practiced universally, there would be a major reduction in the incidence and mortality of colon cancer. (12 Dec 1998) |
| reproducibility of results | The statistical reproducibility of measurements (often in a clinical context), including the testing of instrumentation or techniques to obtain reproducible results. The concept includes reproducibility of physiological measurements, which may be used to develop rules to assess probability or prognosis, or response to a stimulus; reproducibility of occurrence of a condition; and reproducibility of experimental results. (12 Dec 1998) |
| knowledge of results | <psychology> The hypothesis that learning is facilitated when the learner is informed at each step about the progress he is making in his learning. It hypothesises also that learning is facilitated when the learner is promptly informed whether a particular response is correct, and if incorrect, of the direction of error. The two usages refer to distinguishable situations and probably to different psychological processes. (04 Jul 1999) |
| classical epidemiology | <epidemiology> Our term for the varieties of epidemiology primarily concerned with the statistical relationships between disease agents, both infectious and non-infectious; for example a study to establish the relative risk of lung cancer associated with smoking. We contrast this with ecological epidemiology. (05 Dec 1998) |
| clinical epidemiology | The field concerned with applying epidemiological principles in a clinical setting.Whereas classical epidemiology studies populations in an attempt to assess causes and distribution of disease and to formulate statistical measures of risk, clinical epidemiology focuses on medically defined populations (patients). (05 Mar 2000) |
| ecological epidemiology | <epidemiology> A branch of epidemiology which views disease as a result of the ecological interactions between populations of hosts and parasites; what we do. We contrast this with classical epidemiology. (05 Dec 1998) |
| epidemiology | <study> The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in populations and the control of health problems, the study of epidemic disease. (27 Sep 1997) |
| epidemiology, classical | The study of populations in order to determine the frequency and distribution of disease and measure risks. (12 Dec 1998) |
| epidemiology, clinical | Epidemiology focused specifically upon patients. (12 Dec 1998) |
| epidemiology, molecular | The application of molecular biology to the answering of epidemiological questions. The examination of patterns of changes in DNA to implicate particular carcinogens and the use of molecular markers to predict which individuals are at highest risk for a disease are common examples. (12 Dec 1998) |
| population surveillance | <epidemiology> Ongoing scrutiny of a population (general population, study population, target population, etc.), generally using methods distinguished by their practicability, uniformity, and frequently their rapidity, rather than by complete accuracy. (12 Dec 1998) |
| post-marketing surveillance | Procedure implemented after a drug has been licensed for public use, designed to provide information on use and on occurrence of side effects, adverse effects, etc. (05 Mar 2000) |
| product surveillance, postmarketing | Surveillance of drugs, devices, appliances, etc., for efficacy or adverse effects, after they have been released for general sale. (12 Dec 1998) |
| sentinel surveillance | Monitoring of rate of occurrence of specific conditions to assess the stability or change in health levels of a population. It is also the study of disease rates in a specific cohort, geographic area, population subgroup, etc. To estimate trends in larger population. (12 Dec 1998) |
