staphylococcus aureus Potentially pathogenic bacteria found in nasal membranes, skin, hair follicles, and perineum of warm-blooded animals. They may cause a wide range of infections and intoxications.
(12 Dec 1998)
Staphylococcus aureus neutral proteinase <enzyme> Included in the group of microbial metalloproteinases EC 3.4.24.4; ptrb protein is isolated from E coli; sakstar is recombinant staphylokinase
Pharmacological action: fibrinolytic agents
Registry number: EC 3.4.24.-
Synonym: protease II, staphylokinase, staph aureus protease, staphylococcal protease, E coli protease, ptrb protein, sakstar,
(26 Jun 1999)
Staphylococcus pyogenes aureus Potentially pathogenic bacteria found in nasal membranes, skin, hair follicles, and perineum of warm-blooded animals. They may cause a wide range of infections and intoxications.
(12 Dec 1998)
puerperal sepsis Postpartum sepsis with a rise in fever after the first 24 hours following delivery, but before the eleventh postpartum day.
Synonym: childbed fever, puerperal sepsis.
(05 Mar 2000)
sepsis The presence of organisms in the blood.
(16 Dec 1997)
sepsis syndrome <syndrome> A systemic response to infection, defined as hypothermia or hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, a clinically evident focus of infection or positive blood cultures, one or more end organs with either dysfunction or inadequate perfusion, cerebral dysfunction, hypoxaemia, increased plasma lactate or unexplained metabolic acidosis, and oliguria. It is one of the most common causes of adult respiratory distress syndrome. While usually related to infection, it can also be associated with noninfectious insults such as trauma, burns, pancreatitis.
(12 Dec 1998)
neonatal sepsis <paediatrics> A serious blood-borne bacterial infection in the infant who is less than 4 months of age.
A common causative agent is haemophilus influenza type b. Babies who are septic are usually listless, weak, overly sleepy, not urinating and pale.
(27 Sep 1997)
due date The estimated calendar date when a baby will be born, the date the baby is due to be born. It is also called the estimated date of confinement (EDC).
(12 Dec 1998)
dystonia, focal, due to blepharospasm The second most common focal dystonia, the involuntary, forcible closure of the eyelids. The first symptoms may be uncontrollable blinking. Only one eye may be affected initially, but eventually both eyes are usually involved. The spasms may leave the eyelids completely closed causing functional blindness even though the eyes and vision are normal.
(12 Dec 1998)
dystonia, focal, due to torticollis Spasmodic torticollis, or torticollis, is the most common of the focal dystonias. In torticollis, the muscles in the neck that control the position of the head are affected, causing the head to twist and turn to one side. In addition, the head may be pulled forward or backward.
(12 Dec 1998)
thrombotic disease due to protein c deficiency Protein C is a protein in plasma that enters into the cascade of biochemical events leading to the formation of a clot. Deficiency of protein c results in thrombotic (clotting) disease and excess platelets with recurrent thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the vein that occurs when a clot forms). The clot can break loose and travel through the blood stream (thromboembolism) to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism, brain causing a stroke (cerebrovascular accident), heart causing an early heart attack, skin causing what in the newborn is called neonatal purpura fulminans, the adrenal gland causing haemorrhage with abdominal pain, abnormally low blood pressure (hypotension), and salt loss. Protein c deficiency is due to possession of one gene (heterozygosity) in chromosome band 2q13-14. The possession of two such genes (homozygosity) is usually lethal.
(12 Dec 1998)
Staphylococcus <bacteria> Genus of nonmotile gram-positive bacteria that are found in clusters and that produce important exotoxins. Staphylococcus aureus (Staphylococcus pyogenes) is pyogenic, an opportunistic pathogen and responsible for a range of infections including severe sepsis, pneumonia, endocarditis and soft tissue infections. It has protein A on the surface of the cell wall. Coagulase production correlates with virulence: hyaluronidase, lipase and staphylokinase are released in addition to the toxins.
(27 Sep 1997)
staphylococcus antitoxin A preparation from native serum containing antitoxic globulins or their derivatives that specifically neutralise the lethal, skin-necrosing, and haemolytic properties of the alpha-toxin of Staphylococcus aureus.
(05 Mar 2000)
staphylococcus epidermidis A species of staphylococcus that is a spherical, non-motile, gram-positive, chemoorganotrophic, facultative anaerobe. Mainly found on the skin and mucous membrane of warm-blooded animals, it can be primary pathogen or secondary invader.
(12 Dec 1998)
Staphylococcus food poisoning Outbreaks commonly caused by staphylococcal enterotoxin and characterised by an abrupt onset of gastroenteritis within several hours after ingestion of the food contaminated with the preformed exotoxin; vomiting is usually more severe and diarrhoea less severe than in infectious forms of bacterial food poisoning.
