| ileostomy | <procedure, surgery> A surgical procedure where the ileum (small intestine) is attached to the abdominal wall to a bag outside the body. The opening in the abdominal wall is called a stoma. Indications for ileostomy include cases of intestinal obstruction, colon cancer, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and severe diverticulitis. | Rathke's pouch tumour | <oncology, tumour> A form of primary brain tumour which develops in the pituitary gland. These tumours often secrete increased quantities of pituitary hormones (for example growth hormone) which can result in conditions such as gigantism and acromegaly. They are often benign and rare and comprise less than 5% of childhood brain tumours. Other symptoms include vision changes, headache and weight gain. | pavlov pouch | at different points along the dogs' digestive tracts, the russian physiologist ivan petrovich pavlov (1848-1936) surgically created pockets ( pavlov pouches ) from which he could obtain secretions, the aim being to study the physiology of the digestive tract. He did so from the salivary glands down to the stomach, liver and pancreas with considerable success and in 1904 (the 4th year it was awarded) he received the nobel prise for his work on the physiology of digestion, through which knowledge on vital aspects of the subject has been transformed and enlarged. | guttural pouch | A structure in the horse which is a diverticulum of the auditory (eustachian) tube; subject to chronic infections and inflammation and frequently necessitating surgery for relief. Hartmann's pouch, a spheroid or conical pouch at the junction of the neck of the gallbladder and the cystic duct. Synonym: ampulla of gallbladder, fossa provesicalis, pelvis of gallbladder. Heidenhain pouch, a small sac or pouch of the stomach, vagally denervated and closed off from the main cavity but with an opening through the abdominal wall, fashioned for the purpose of obtaining gastric juice and for studying gastric secretion in physiologic experiments.
