| Rathke's diverticulum | A tubular outgrowth of ectoderm from the stomodeum of the embryo; it grows dorsad toward the infundibular process of the diencephalon, around which it forms a cup-like mass, giving rise to the pars distalis and pars juxtaneuralis of the hypophysis. Synonym: craniopharyngeal canal, hypophyseal pouch, Rathke's diverticulum, Rathke's pocket, Rathke's pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Rathke, Martin Heinrich | <person> Was a Physiologist and Pathologist. Appointed Professor at Dorpat and later at Konigsberg, where he was Professor of Zoology and Anatomy. Rathke's Pouch, Pocket - a depression in the roof of the embryonic mouth in front of the bucco-pharyngeal membrane. Lived: 1793-1860. B. Danzig, Aug 25th, 1793, d. Konigsberg, Sep 3rd, 1860. | Rathke's bundles | Muscular bundles on the lining walls of the ventricles of the heart. Synonym: columnae carneae, Rathke's bundles. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Rathke's cleft cyst | An intrasellar or suprasellar cyst lined by cuboidal epithelium derived from remnants of Rathke's pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Rathke's pouch | A tubular outgrowth of ectoderm from the stomodeum of the embryo; it grows dorsad toward the infundibular process of the diencephalon, around which it forms a cup-like mass, giving rise to the pars distalis and pars juxtaneuralis of the hypophysis. Synonym: craniopharyngeal canal, hypophyseal pouch, Rathke's diverticulum, Rathke's pocket, Rathke's pouch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Rathke's pouch tumour | <oncology, tumour> A form of primary brain tumour which develops in the pituitary gland. These tumours often secrete increased quantities of pituitary hormones (for example growth hormone) which can result in conditions such as gigantism and acromegaly. They are often benign and rare and comprise less than 5% of childhood brain tumours. Other symptoms include vision changes, headache and weight gain. Treatment often includes a combination of surgery and radiation therapy. (27 Sep 1997) |
| allantoenteric diverticulum | An endoderm-lined outpouching of the hindgut (in humans, the yolk sac of a very young embryo) representing the primordium of the allantois; in most amniotes, it grows into the extraembryonic celom; in humans, the distal part of the allantoic lumen is rudimentary, not extending beyond the body stalk. Synonym: allantoenteric diverticulum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| allantoic diverticulum | An endoderm-lined outpouching of the hindgut (in humans, the yolk sac of a very young embryo) representing the primordium of the allantois; in most amniotes, it grows into the extraembryonic celom; in humans, the distal part of the allantoic lumen is rudimentary, not extending beyond the body stalk. Synonym: allantoenteric diverticulum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventricular diverticulum | A congenital outpouching of the right or left ventricle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vesical diverticulum | A diverticulum of the bladder wall; may be either true or false type. (05 Mar 2000) |
| meckel diverticulum | <radiology> Rule of secondarys, 2 cm wide, 2 feet from I-C valve, males 2:1, 2% of population, antimesenteric (unlike duplication cyst), with or without ectopic gastric/pancreatic tissue see: Meckel scan (12 Dec 1998) |
| meckel's diverticulum | An out-pouching of the small bowel (ileum). Present in about 2% of people and usually occurs about 2 feet before the junction with the colon. Can be lined by stomach-type mucosa and ulcerate, perforate, or cause small bowel obstruction. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cervical diverticulum | A diverticulum in the neck derived from retention of part of one of the pharyngeal pouches (endodermal) or branchial grooves (ectodermal) of the embryo. (05 Mar 2000) |
| metanephric diverticulum | An outgrowth from the caudal portion of the mesonephric duct on either side, which grows cephalodorsally to make contact with the masses of metanephrogenous tissue (nephric blastemas) that give rise to the epithelial lining of the ureter and of the pelvis and the collecting ducts of the kidney. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Pertik's diverticulum | An abnormally deep recessus pharyngeus. (05 Mar 2000) |
