| cassette mechanism | <molecular biology> Term used for genes such as the a and _ genes that determine mating type in yeast, either one or the other is active. In this gene conversion process, a double stranded nuclease makes a cut at a specific point in the MAT locus, the old gene is replaced with a copy of a silent gene from one or other flanking region and the new copy becomes active. As the process involves replacing one ready made construct with another in an active slot it is called a cassette mechanism. (18 Nov 1997) |
| cassette mutagenesis | The production of mutants within a region (often bounded by unique restriction sites) by the use of synthetic oligonucleotides that fill the gap with mutants designed into the synthetic genetic material. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Virchow-Holder angle | An angle formed by the meeting of a line drawn from the middle of the nasofrontal suture to the base of the anterior nasal spine with a line drawn from this last point to the centre of the external auditory meatus. Synonym: Virchow-Holder angle. (05 Mar 2000) |
| high-holder | <zoology> The flicker. Synonym: high-hole. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| specimen holder | <microscopy> A device which supports the specimen and specimen screen in the correct position in the specimen chamber of the microscope. (05 Aug 1998) |
| needle-holder | An instrument for grasping a needle in suturing. Synonym: needle forceps. (05 Mar 2000) |
| air pump | 1. <physics> A kind of pump for exhausting air from a vessel or closed space; also, a pump to condense air of force in into a closed space. 2. <engineering> A pump used to exhaust from a condenser the condensed steam, the water used for condensing, and any commingled air. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| breast pump | A suction instrument for withdrawing milk from the breast. (05 Mar 2000) |
| calcium pump | A transport protein responsible for moving calcium out of the cytoplasm. See: calcium ATPase. (18 Nov 1997) |
| calf pump | Muscular activity of calf that promotes venous flow towards the heart. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Carrel-Lindbergh pump | A perfusion device designed for use in culture of whole organs. (05 Mar 2000) |
| constant infusion pump | An electrically driven device for delivery from a reservoir of a constant, often very small, volume of solution over a prolonged period of time. (05 Mar 2000) |
| saliva pump | saliva ejector |
| proton pump | Integral membrane proteins that transport protons across a membrane against a concentration gradient. This transport is driven by hydrolysis of ATP by hydrogen-transporting ATP synthase. (12 Dec 1998) |
