| plicamycin | <chemical> A tricyclic pentaglycosidic antibiotic from streptomyces strains that inhibits RNA and protein synthesis by adhering to DNA. It is used as a fluorescent dye and as an antineoplastic agent, especially in bone and testicular tumours. Plicamycin is also used to reduce hypercalcaemia, especially that due to malignancies. [USP] an antineoplastic antibiotic, produced by Streptomyces plicatus, that binds to DNA and inhibits RNA synthesis; it is used for treatment of advanced testicular carcinoma. It also has an inhibiting effect on osteoclasts and is used to treat hypercalcemia and hypercalciuria caused by metastatic malignancy. Administered intravenously. Formerly called mithramycin.
