||

| plasmodium falciparum | A species of protozoa that is the causal agent of falciparum malaria (malaria, falciparum). It is most prevalent in the tropics and subtropics. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| malaria, falciparum | The most dangerous type of malaria. Persons carrying the sickle cell gene have some protection against malaria. Persons with a gene for haemoglobin c (another abnormal haemoglobin like sickle haemoglobin), thalassaemia trait or deficiency of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (g6pd) are thought also to have partial protection against malaria. (12 Dec 1998) |
| falciparum malaria | <infectious disease> A tropical parasitic disease caused by one of the genus Plasmodium and carried by infected mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. This parasite uses red blood cells to complete its reproductive cycle. Common symptoms of an attack include high fever, chills, sweats and body aches. (27 Sep 1997) |
| malaria, cerebral | A condition that is most commonly seen as a severe complication of malaria, falciparum mainly involving the brain. It has also been reported to occur as a result of infection with other plasmodium species. This disease is often fatal and presents as disturbances in consciousness ranging from somnolence to coma, major motor seizures, and organic psychosis. The onset may be gradual or sudden following a convulsion. (12 Dec 1998) |
| cerebral malaria | A form of falciparum malaria characterised by cerebral involvement, with extreme hyperthermia and headache, and a case fatality rate of about 50%. (05 Mar 2000) |
| falciparum exported serine-threonine protein kinase | <enzyme> Isolated from plasmodium falciparum; genbank u40232 Registry number: EC 2.7.10.- Synonym: fest kinase (26 Jun 1999) |
| falciparum fever | <infectious disease> A tropical parasitic disease caused by one of the genus Plasmodium and carried by infected mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. This parasite uses red blood cells to complete its reproductive cycle. Common symptoms of an attack include high fever, chills, sweats and body aches. (27 Sep 1997) |

| pregnancy complications | The co-occurrence of pregnancy and a disease. The disease may precede or follow conception and it may or may not have a deleterious effect on the pregnant woman or foetus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pregnancy complications, cardiovascular | The co-occurrence of pregnancy and a cardiovascular disease. The disease may precede or follow conception and it may or may not have a deleterious effect on the pregnant woman or foetus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| pregnancy complications, haematologic | The co-occurrence of pregnancy and a blood disease. The haematologic disorder may be of the cells or coagulation elements of the blood but does not refer to deficiencies or excesses of various substances in the blood, such as hypercalcaemia or hypocalcaemia. It may precede or follow conception and it may or may not have a deleterious effect on the pregnant woman or foetus. (12 Dec 1998) |
