| social problems | Situations affecting a significant number of people, that are believed to be sources of difficulty or threaten the stability of the community, and that require programs of amelioration. (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| International Classification of Health Problems in Primary Care | A classification of diseases, conditions and problems arranged for use in primary care where diagnostic precision is seldom possible. (05 Mar 2000) |
| other-directed | Pertaining to a person readily influenced by the attitudes of others. (05 Mar 2000) |
| employment | The state of being engaged in an activity or service for wages or salary. (12 Dec 1998) |
| employment, supported | Paid work for mentally or physically disabled persons, taking place in regular or normal work settings. It may be competitive employment (work that pays minimum wage) or employment with subminimal wages in individualised or group placement situations. It is intended for persons with severe disabilities who require a range of support services to maintain employment. Supported employment differs from sheltered workshops in that work in the latter takes place in a controlled working environment. Federal regulations are authorised and administered by the u.s. Department of education, office of special education and rehabilitative services. (12 Dec 1998) |
| transferases (other substituted phosphate groups) | <enzyme> A class of enzymes that transfers substituted phosphate groups. Registry number: EC 2.7.8 (12 Dec 1998) |
| adhesion-related kinase | <chemical> New member of the immunoglobulin superfamily with 2 immunoglobulin-like domains Synonym: ark protein, ark receptor tyrosine kinase (26 Jun 1999) |
| age-related macular degeneration | A common macular degeneration beginning with drusen of the macula and pigment disruption and sometimes leading to severe loss of central vision. (05 Mar 2000) |
| aids-related complex | A prodromal phase of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Laboratory criteria separating aids-related complex (arc) from aids include elevated or hyperactive B-cell humoral immune responses, compared to depressed or normal antibody reactivity in aids; follicular or mixed hyperplasia in arc lymph nodes, leading to lymphocyte degeneration and depletion more typical of aids; evolving succession of histopathological lesions such as localization of kaposi's sarcoma, signaling the transition to the full-blown aids. (12 Dec 1998) |
| aids-related opportunistic infections | Opportunistic infections found in patients who test positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The most common include pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, kaposi's sarcoma, cryptosporidiosis, herpes simplex, toxoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and infections with mycobacterium avium complex, microsporidium, and cytomegalovirus. (12 Dec 1998) |
| AIDS-related virus | An obsolete term for human immunodeficiency virus. (05 Mar 2000) |

| amphetamine-related disorders | Disorders related or resulting from use of amphetamines. (12 Dec 1998) |
| angiotensin-related carboxypeptidase | <enzyme> Rat and bovine brain synaptosomal enzyme can hydrolyze angiotensin I to des-leu angiotensin I, but no further Registry number: EC 3.4.- Synonym: angiotensin-specific carboxypeptidase (26 Jun 1999) |
| calcitonin gene-related peptide | <protein> A second product transcribed from the calcitonin gene. Calcitonin gene related peptide is found in a number of tissues including nervous tissue. It is a vasodilator that may participate in the cutaneous triple response. It is a neuropeptide of 37 amino acids with structural homology to salmon calcitonin. Co-localises with substance P in neurons. It occurs as a result of alternative processing of mRNA from the calcitonin gene. The neuropeptide is widely distributed in neural tissue of the brain, gut, perivascular nerves, and other tissue. The peptide produces multiple biological effects and has both circulatory and neurotransmitter modes of action. In particular, it is a potent endogenous vasodilator. Intracerebral administration leads to a rise in noradrenergic sympathetic outflow, a rise in blood pressure and a fall in gastric secretion. Acronym: CGRP (05 May 2002) |
