| indian ocean | A body of water covering approximately one-fifth of the total ocean area of the earth, extending amidst africa in the west, Australia in the east, asia in the north, and antarctica in the south. Including the red sea and the persian gulf, it constitutes the third largest ocean after the atlantic ocean and the pacific ocean. (new encyclopaedia britannica micropaedia, 15th ed, 1990, p289) (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| indian ocean islands | Numerous islands in the indian ocean situated east of madagascar, north to the arabian sea and east to sri lanka. Included are comoros (republic), madagascar (republic), maldives (republic), mauritius (parliamentary democracy), pemba (administered by tanzania), reunion (a department of france), and seychelles (republic). (12 Dec 1998) |
| ocean | The great body of salt water that covers mores than two thirds of the surface of the earth, any of its five principal geographical divisions, the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Antartic. (09 Oct 1997) |
| ocean-type fish | An anadromous fish that shows no indication on its scales or other hard parts of an extended freshwater residence early in its life. (09 Oct 1997) |
| glucose solution, hypertonic | Solution that is usually 10 percent glucose but may be higher. An isotonic solution of glucose is 5 percent. (12 Dec 1998) |
| saline solution, hypertonic | Hypertonic sodium chloride solution. A solution having an osmotic pressure greater than that of physiologic salt solution (0.9 g nacl in 100 ml purified water). (12 Dec 1998) |
| hypertonic | Of a fluid, sufficiently concentrated to cause osmotic shrinkage of cells immersed in it. Note that a mildly hyperosmotic solution is not necessarily hypertonic for viable cells, that are capable of regulating their volumes by active transport. See: hypotonic, isotonic. (18 Nov 1997) |
| hypertonic bladder | A bladder with poor compliance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypertonic solution | Any solution which has a higher osmotic pressure than another solution (that is, has a higher concentration of solutes than another solution). A solution which contains a higher concentration of solutes than the cells that it is bathing, so that water is drawn out of the cells and into the solution by osmosis. A hypertonic solution is the opposite of a hypotonic solution. (09 Oct 1997) |
| hypertonic solutions | Solutions having a higher osmotic pressure than blood, or another solution with which they are compared. (12 Dec 1998) |
| absent nasal septum | <radiology> Cocaine, Wegener's (midline lethal granuloma), surgery, trauma, syphilis, sarcoid (12 Dec 1998) |
| accessory nasal cartilages | Variable small plates of cartilage located in the interval between the greater alar and lateral nasal cartilages. Synonym: cartilagines nasales accessoriae, sesamoid cartilages of nose. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior nasal aperture | The anterior nasal opening in the skull. Synonym: apertura piriformis, piriform opening. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior nasal spine | A pointed projection at the anterior extremity of the intermaxillary suture; the tip, as seen on a lateral cephalometric radiograph, is used as a cephalometric landmark. Synonym: spina nasalis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| benign nasal tumour | A benign tumour of the posterior nasopharynx that is most common in adolescent boys. Symptoms repeated epistaxis, nasal congestion, nasal discharge and hearing loss. A skull X-ray or a CT scan of the head can confirm the presence of an angiofibroma. Treatment may include the surgical removal of the lesion if it is enlarging or blocking the airway. (27 Sep 1997) |
