| norfloxacin | <chemical> 1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-(1-piperazinyl)-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid. Quinoline-derived synthetic antibacterial agent with a very broad spectrum of action. Oral administration yields highly bactericidal plasma, tissue, and urine levels. Norfloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA-gyrase and is used in gastrointestinal, eye, and urinary infections. Pharmacological action: anti-infective agents, fluoroquinolone, enzyme inhibitors. Chemical name: 3-Quinolinecarboxylic acid, 1-ethyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-(1-piperazinyl)- (12 Dec 1998) |

| boa | Origin: L. Boa a kind of water serpent. Perh. Fr. Bos an ox. 1. <herpetology> A genus of large American serpents, including the boa constrictor, the emperor boa of Mexico (B. Imperator), and the chevalier boa of Peru (B. Eques). The name is also applied to related genera; as, the dog-headed boa (Xiphosoma caninum). 2. The name is also loosely applied to other large serpents which crush their prey, particularly to those of the genus Python, found in Asia and Africa. Origin: NL. See Boa, and Constrictor. | RNA caps | Compounds with the general structure 7-methyl-5'-guanosine triphosphate-5'-x which modify the 5' end of eukaryotic cellular and viral messenger RNA and some heterogeneous nuclear rnas. These compounds, which are positively charged, protect the above specified rnas at their termini against attack by phosphatases and other nucleases and promote mRNA function at the level of initiation of translation. Analogs of the RNA caps (RNA cap analogs), which lack the positive charge, inhibit the initiation of protein synthesis. (12 Dec 1998) |
| dental caps | <veterinary> Deciduous cheek teeth in the horse which remain attached to erupting permanent teeth. (05 Mar 2000) |
