a genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae, made up of motile, pleomorphic organisms found in fecal material of humans and other mammals. The organisms resemble Proteus, except that they do not produce hydrogen sulfide or liquefy gelatin.
