| 설명 | 새로 생긴 물질이라는 뜻이다. 이것은 다른 말로 “종양(tumor)”이라고도 하는 데, 실제로 이들의 명확한 뜻은 서로 다르다. 종양이라는 말은 “그 크기가 1cm가 넘는 일종의 혹”을 말하는 것으로 피부과에서는 이보다 작은 혹을 구진이라고 하여 구별하여 부른다. 하지만, 이것은 또한 피부뿐만 아니라 신체내 어디에서든 생길 수 있으므로 모두 통칭하여 종양이라고 부른다. 이에 비해 “신생물”은 신체내 없던 것이 새로 생겨났다는 뜻으로 붙인 말이다. 그러나, 이 둘의 관계를 명확히 규정짓지 않고 있으며 대개 같은 뜻으로 혼용된다. 신생물에는 “양성(benign)”과 “악성(malignant)”이 있다. 이 둘의 구별은 여러 가지 기준에 따르지만, 때로는 구별이 어려울 때도 있다. 대개 양성은 생명단축을 잘 일으키지 않는 것으로 치료후에 재발도 잘 하지 않는다. 이에 비해 악성은 재발뿐만 아니라 다른 기관으로 옮겨가서 같은 병변이 발생하는 “전이(metastasis)”현상도 일어난다. 따라서 생명을 단축시키는 경우가 많으며, 대개 치료가 어렵다. |

| 설명 | 호흡중 들어온 공기가 지나는 통로에 해당한다. 호흡기계의 일부분으로, 코나 입으로 들어온 공기는 습해지고 따뜻해져서 몸의 체온과 동일해진 뒤에 인두를 거쳐서 후두를 지나 기관, 기관지를 통과한 뒤에야 비로소 허파에 도달하게 된다. 후두는 작은 연골들로 구성되어 있는데 그 목적은 단지 공기의 지나가는 통로 구실외에 명확한 말(발성)을 하는데 있다. 후두에는 성대가 있어서 여기에 붙어 있는 작은 근육과 연골의 움직임으로 우리는 말하고 노래할 수 있다. |

| 설명 | 피부에서 생기는 암의 일종. 주로 백인에게 호발하며, 50대~70대에 많이 발생하고, 젊은 여성에게 증가하는 경향이 있으며, 피부암중 1~3%를 차지하는 드문 병으로 피부와 기타 기관의 멜라닌 세포계에서 유래하는 악성종양이다. 원인으로 일광노출과 직접적인 관계가 있으며 가족적 발생도 볼 수 있다. |

| cancer, larynx | Cancer of the voice box. The larynx is the voice box located at the top of the windpipe (trachea). Cancer of the larynx occurs most often in people over the age of 55 years.
