| Luys' body | A circumscript nucleus, shaped like a biconvex lens, located in the ventral part of the subthalamus on the dorsal surface of the peduncular part of the internal capsule immediately rostral to the substantia nigra. The nucleus receives a massive topographic projection from the lateral segment of the globus pallidus, and a somatopically organised projection from the ipsilateral motor cortex; a smaller bundle of afferents from the centromedian nucleus of the thalamus terminate in the rostral part of the nucleus The subthalamic nucleus projects to both pallidal segments, to the pars reticulata of the substantia nigra, and in a small way to the ipsilateral pedunculopontine nucleus. Synonym: nucleus subthalamicus, corpus luysi, Luys' body, nucleus of Luys. (05 Mar 2000) |

| nucleus of Luys | A circumscript nucleus, shaped like a biconvex lens, located in the ventral part of the subthalamus on the dorsal surface of the peduncular part of the internal capsule immediately rostral to the substantia nigra. Synonym: nucleus subthalamicus, corpus luysi, Luys' body, nucleus of Luys. (05 Mar 2000) |
| centre median de Luys | Synonym: centromedian nucleus. Origin: Fr. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Luys, Jules | <person> French physician, 1828-1897. See: Luys' body, centre median de Luys, corpus luysi, nucleus of Luys. (05 Mar 2000) |
| body of caudate nucleus | The suprathalamic part of the caudate nucleus lying in the floor of the central part of the lateral ventricle. Synonym: corpus nuclei caudati. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral nucleus of trapezoid body | A cell group embedded among the fibres of the trapezoid body, the major decussation of the central auditory pathway, in the lower pons. The nucleus receives fibres from the contralateral cochlear nuclei and contributes fibres to the ascending auditory system or lateral lemniscus. Synonym: nucleus ventralis corporis trapezoidei. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus of lateral geniculate body | Nucleus of the thalamus characterised by six layers of cells, two parvicellular, four magnocellular, alternating with thin layers of fibres; receives bilateral visual input, projects to calcarine cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus of medial geniculate body | The nerve cell groups composing the medial geniculate body (corpus geniculatum mediale). Synonym: nucleus corporis geniculati medialis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus of the mamillary body | A single large-celled lateral nucleus and a larger bipartite medial nucleus together comprising the mamillary body; present in the caudal hypothalamus. Synonym: nuclei corporis mamillaris, nucleus of the mamillary body. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal nucleus of trapezoid body | A circumscript, bipartite cell group located ventrolaterally in the lower pontine tegmentum, immediately dorsal to the trapezoid body; the nucleus receives fibres from both the ipsilateral and contralateral cochlear nuclei, and contributes fibres to the lateral (auditory) lemniscus of both sides. It is believed to be prominently involved in the function of spatial localization of sound. Synonym: nucleus dorsalis corporis trapezoidei, oliva superior, superior olivary nucleus, superior olive. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acetone body | <biochemistry> Any of the three compounds created by acetyl coenzyme A (acetoacetate, hydroxybutyrate, and acetone) which are water-soluble cellular fuels normally exported by the liver. They can build up in the blood and body tissues because of starvation, untreated diabetes mellitus, or other disorders that interfere with carbohydrate metabolism. The body rids itself of ketones mainly through urine, but it rids itself of acetone through the lungs, which gives the breath a characteristic fruity odour. If ketones build up in the body long enough, they cause serious illness and coma (see ketoacidosis.) (09 Oct 1997) |
| acute inclusion body encephalitis | The most common acute encephalitis, caused by HSV-1; affects persons of any age; preferentially involves the inferomedial portions of the temporal lobe and the orbital portions of the frontal lobes; pathologically, severe haemorrhagic necrosis is present along with, in the acute stages, intranuclear eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons and glial cells. Synonym: acute inclusion body encephalitis, herpes encephalitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adrenal body | See adrenal gland. (12 Dec 1998) |
| alveolar body | That portion of bone in either the maxilla or the mandible which surrounds and supports the teeth. (12 Dec 1998) |
| amygdaloid body | Almond-shaped group of basal nuclei anterior to the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle of the brain, within the temporal lobe. The amygdala is part of the limbic system. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Luys' body syndrome, nucleus |
see hemiballismus and nucleus subthalamicus.
