| Austin Flint | <person> Flint, the son and grandson of physicians, was born in Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1832. He founded the Buffalo Medical College. Austin became associated with Dr. Samuel D. Gross at the University of Louisville. He was a pioneer user and advocator of the binaural stethoscope, and was called the "American Laennec." This internist described a loud presystolic murmur at the cardiac apex in aortic regurgitation now known as the Austin Flint Murmur (1862). He introduced the terms "cavernous" and "broncho-vesicular respiration." His "Principles and Practice of Medicine" published in 1866 was a leading textbook of medicine for many years.
