| Jadassohn's nevus | Congenital papillary acanthosis of the epidermis, with hyperplasia of sebaceous glands developing at puberty and presence of apocrine glands in non-apocrine areas of the skin (commonly the scalp). A variety of epithelial tumours may arise from a nevus sebaceus in adult life, most commonly basal cell carcinoma. Synonym: Jadassohn's nevus, organoid nevus. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| Jadassohn-Tieche nevus | A dark blue or blue-black nevus covered by smooth skin and formed by heavily pigmented spindle-shaped or dendritic melanocytes in the reticular dermis. Synonym: Jadassohn-Tieche nevus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Borst-Jadassohn type intraepidermal epithelioma | <tumour> Precancerous lesions clinically suggestive of actinic or seborrheic keratosis, with nests of immature or abnormal keratinocytes within the epidermis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Jadassohn, Josef | <person> German dermatologist in Switzerland, 1863-1936; introduced the patch test for contact dermatitis. See: Jadassohn's nevus, Borst-Jadassohn type intraepidermal epithelioma, Jadassohn-Pellizzari anetoderma, Jadassohn-Tieche nevus, Franceschetti-Jadassohn syndrome, Jadassohn-Lewandowski syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Jadassohn-Lewandowski syndrome | A syndrome of ectodermal dysplasia of abnormal thickness and elevation of nail plates with palmar and plantar hyperkeratosis; the tongue is whitish and glazed owing to papillary atrophy; autosomal dominant inheritance. Synonym: Jadassohn-Lewandowski syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Jadassohn-Pellizzari anetoderma | Cutaneous atrophy preceded by erythematous or urticarial lesions of the trunk and upper portions of the extremities, and enlarging to 2-3 cm before undergoing involution. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Franceschetti-Jadassohn syndrome | <syndrome> Reticular skin pigmentation, diminished sweating, hypodontia, and hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles; may be confused with incontinentia pigmenti but is as common in males as in females; autosomal dominant inheritance. Synonym: Franceschetti-Jadassohn syndrome. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adenocarcinoma, sebaceous | A malignant tumour composed of cells showing differentiation toward sebaceous epithelium. The tumour is solitary, firm, somewhat raised, more or less translucent, and covered with normal or slightly verrucose epidermis. It may be yellow or orange. The face and scalp are the commonest sites. The growth can be slow or rapid but metastasis is uncommon. Surgery cures most of the cases. (12 Dec 1998) |
| congenital sebaceous hyperplasia | Misnomer for nevus sebaceus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cyst, sebaceous | A sebaceous cyst is a rounded swollen area of the skin formed by an abnormal sac of retained excretion (sebum) from the sebaceous follicles. (12 Dec 1998) |
| sebaceous | <physiology> Pertaining to, or secreting, fat; composed of fat; having the appearance of fat; as, the sebaceous secretions of some plants, or the sebaceous humor of animals. <obstetrics> Sebaceous cyst, small subcutaneous glands, usually connected with hair follicles. They secrete an oily semifluid matter, composed in great part of fat, which softens and lubricates the hair and skin. Origin: NL. Sebaceus, from L. Sebum tallow, grease. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| sebaceous adenoma | <tumour> A benign neoplasm of sebaceous tissue, with a predominance of mature secretory sebaceous cells. Compare: adenoma sebaceum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sebaceous cyst | A closed sac (sebaceous gland) within the tissue containing oily or fatty semi-solid material. These cysts are found most commonly on the genitalia, vulva or labia. Features include a nontender, small lump in the skin. Sebaceous cysts which turn red or tender may require treatment with oral antibiotics. Warm wet compresses may help the cyst expel some of its contents. Surgical excision of the cyst may be necessary to prevent recurrence. (27 Sep 1997) |
| sebaceous epithelioma | <tumour> A benign tumour of the sebaceous gland epithelium in which small basaloid or germinative cells predominate. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sebaceous follicles | Numerous holocrine glands in the dermis that usually open into the hair follicles and secrete an oily semifluid sebum. Synonym: glandulae sebaceae, oil glands, sebaceous follicles. (05 Mar 2000) |
