| microparticle enzyme immunoassay | A technique in which the solid-phase support consists of very small microparticles in liquid suspension. Specific reagent antibodies are covalently bound to the microparticles. Antigen, if present, is then "sandwiched" between bound antibodies and antigen-specific, enzyme-labelled antibodies. | enzyme-multiplied immunoassay technique | A type of immunoassay in which the ligand is labelled with an enzyme, and the enzyme-ligand-antibody complex is enzymatically inactive, allowing quantitation of unlabelled ligand. The test uses antibodies that react only with the particular drug for which the sample is being tested. The antibodies attach themselves to the drug if it is present in the sample. It is not designed to measure amounts of the drug present, only to detect its presence or absence. It is used predominantly, but not exclusively, for the detection of drugs of abuse in the urine. | fluorescence polarisation immunoassay | A technique which takes advantage of the increased polarisation (non-random propagation of emission) of fluorescent light emissions when a fluorescent labelled antigen is bound by reagent antibody. The higher the concentration of unlabelled patient antigen present in the test mixture, the less bound fluorescent antigen is present and, consequently, the lower the polarisation of the fluorescent light emission. | fluorescence polarization immunoassay | Fluoroimmunoassay where detection of the hapten-antibody reaction is based on measurement of the increased polarization of fluorescence-labelled hapten when it is combined with antibody.
