| nucleus of trochlear nerve | A group of motor neurons innervating the superior oblique muscle of the contralateral eye. The nucleus lies in the caudal half of the midbrain, behind the oculomotor nucleus, in the most ventral part of the central gray substance, near the midline. Synonym: nucleus nervi trochlearis, nucleus of trochlear nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| trochlear nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The trochlear nerve controls an extraocular muscle. Lesions of this nerve will result in rotation of the eyeball upward and outward (and double vision). Synonym: cranial nerve IV. (27 Sep 1997) |
| axillary nerve injury | <neurology> A condition involving dysfunction of the axillary nerve which normally supplies the deltoid and teres minor muscles and sensation to the lateral aspect of the shoulder. This condition is a type of peripheral neuropathy that may manifest as the result of a variety of disease processes or injuries. Conditions associated with axillary nerve dysfunction include mononeuritis multiplex, fracture of the humerus, abduction injury to the shoulder, pressure to the armpit from a cast, splint or crutches. Symptoms include numbness over the outer portion of the shoulder, shoulder weakness and difficulty lifting arm or objects over your head. An EMG, nerve conduction study or muscle biopsy can be helpful in making the diagnosis. Recovery is generally spontaneous if the underlying cause can be corrected and shoulder mobility is preserved. Corticosteroid injections may be indicated in some instances. (02 Jan 1998) |
| decussation of trochlear nerves | The crossing of the two trochlear nerves at their exit through the velum medullare anterius. Synonym: decussatio nervorum trochlearium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| synovial trochlear bursa | <anatomy> The synovial sheath enclosing the tendon of the superior oblique muscle as it passes through the trochlea. Synonym: vagina tendinis musculi obliqui superioris, synovial trochlear bursa, trochlear synovial bursa, vagina synovialis trochleae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear | <anatomy> Shaped like, or resembling, a pulley; pertaining to, or connected with, a trochlea; as, a trochlear articular surface; the trochlear muscle of the eye. Trochlear nerve. See Pathetic nerve, under Pathetic. Origin: L. Trochlea block or pulley. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| trochlear fossa | A shallow depression in the roof of the orbit close to the medial margin to which is attached the pulley for the superior oblique tendon. Synonym: fovea trochlearis, fossa trochlearis, trochlear fossa, trochlear pit. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear fovea | A shallow depression in the roof of the orbit close to the medial margin to which is attached the pulley for the superior oblique tendon. Synonym: fovea trochlearis, fossa trochlearis, trochlear fossa, trochlear pit. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear notch | The large saemicircular notch at the proximal extremity of the ulna between the olecranon and coronoid processes that articulates with the trochlea of the humerus. Synonym: incisura trochlearis, incisura semilunaris ulnae, semilunar notch. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear nucleus | A group of motor neurons innervating the superior oblique muscle of the contralateral eye. The nucleus lies in the caudal half of the midbrain, behind the oculomotor nucleus, in the most ventral part of the central gray substance, near the midline. Synonym: nucleus nervi trochlearis, nucleus of trochlear nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear pit | A shallow depression in the roof of the orbit close to the medial margin to which is attached the pulley for the superior oblique tendon. Synonym: fovea trochlearis, fossa trochlearis, trochlear fossa, trochlear pit. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear process | A projection from the lateral side of the calcaneus between the tendons of the peroneus longus and brevis. Synonym: trochlea peronealis, trochlea fibularis calcanei, peroneal pulley, processus trochlearis, spina peronealis, trochlear process. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear spine | A spicule of bone arising from the edge of the trochlear fovea, giving attachment to the pulley of the superior oblique muscle of the eyeball. Synonym: spina trochlearis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| trochlear synovial bursa | <anatomy> The synovial sheath enclosing the tendon of the superior oblique muscle as it passes through the trochlea. Synonym: vagina tendinis musculi obliqui superioris, synovial trochlear bursa, trochlear synovial bursa, vagina synovialis trochleae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abbreviated injury scale | Classification system for assessing impact injury severity developed and published by the american association for automotive medicine. It is the system of choice for coding single injuries and is the foundation for methods assessing multiple injuries or for assessing cumulative effects of more than one injury. These include maximum ais (mais), injury severity score (iss), and probability of death score (pods). (12 Dec 1998) |
