| Hippelates | The eye gnats, a genus of flies in the family Chloropidae (fruit flies) that are attracted to the body secretions and fluids of animals and man, particularly those in the eyes. a genus of small flies of the family Chloropidae. H. fla´vipes is thought to be a mechanical vector of yaws in Haiti, and H. pal´lipes is thought to be a mechanical vector of yaws in Jamaica. H. pu´sio is the eye gnat of the southern United States from Florida to California and is a mechanical vector of epidemic conjunctivitis, usually of a severe follicular type.
