| Brucke's tunic | <anatomy> An older term, formerly used to designate the retina exclusive of the layer of rods and cones. Synonym: Brucke's tunic. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vascular tunic of eye | The vascular, pigmentary, or middle coat of the eye, comprising the choroid, ciliary body, and iris. Synonym: tunica vasculosa bulbi, Haller's tunica vasculosa, tunica vasculosa oculi, uvea, uveal tract. (05 Mar 2000) |

| serous tunic | serous membrane |
| nervous tunic of eyeball | Light sensitive layer of the eye. In vertebrates, looking from outside, there are four major cell layers: (i) the outer neural retina, which contains neurons (ganglion cells, amacrine cells, bipolar cells) as well as blood vessels, (ii) the photoreceptor layer, a single layer of rods and cones, (iii) the pigmented retinal epithelium (PRE or RPE), (iv) the choroid, composed of connective tissue, fibroblasts and including a well vascularised layer, the chorio capillaris, underlying the basal lamina of the PRE. Behind the choroid is the sclera, a thick organ capsule. In molluscs (especially cephalopods such as the squid) the retina has the light sensitive cells as the outer layer with the neural and supporting tissues below. See: retinal rods, retinal cones, rhodopsin. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tunic | <botany> Thin membranous or fibrous outer layers of a bulb or corm. (09 Oct 1997) |
| fibrous tunic of corpus spongiosum | <anatomy> The thick layer of fibrous tissue surrounding the corpus spongiosum penis. It is thinner than the corresponding layer around each corpus cavernosum. Synonym: tunica albuginea corporis spongiosi, fibrous tunic of corpus spongiosum. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fibrous tunic of eye | The outer layer of the eyeball composed of the sclera and cornea. Synonym: tunica fibrosa bulbi, tunica externa oculi. (05 Mar 2000) |

| Henle, Friedrich | <person> German anatomist, pathologist, and histologist born in Furth, near Nuremberg, 1809. He was a student and Prosector of Anatomy in Berlin and became Professor of Anatomy in Zurich in 1840. In 1844 went to Heidelberg. From 1852 until his death was professor of Anatomy in Gottingen. Was one of the most celebrated German Anatomists of Jewish descent, well known for his many contributions to microscopic anatomy. D. 1885. Henle's Loop - the looped portion of the uriniferous tubules of the kidney. Allgemeine Anatomie. Leipzig. 1841. Systematiche Anatomie. Brunswick. 1855. Many other structures are associated with Henle's name and more than twenty ligaments were named by him. Lived: 1809-1885. | Henle's ansa | The U-shaped part of the nephron extending from the proximal to the distal convoluted tubules, consisting of descending and ascending limbs, located in the medulla renalis and medullary ray. Synonym: Henle's ansa, Henle's loop. (05 Mar 2000) |
