| 설명 | 태아 때부터 온몸에 나 있는 가늘고 부드러운 짧은 털. 색소가 적고 등-엉덩이-팔에 특히 많다. 생후에는 그 일부가 굵고 긴 머리털이나 눈썹으로 변한다. 사춘기가 되면 음모-겨드랑이털-수염 등으로 되며, 나머지 것이 솜털로 남는다. |

| 설명 | 모발은 신체 부위에 따라 생물학적 및 형태학적 차이를 보인다. 즉 구조, 성장 속도, 자극에 대한 반응에 차이가 있다. 즉 성 호르몬은 눈썹(eyebrow)나 속눈썹(eyelash) 발육에 직접적 영향이 없으나 성인에서 특징적인 음부, 겨드랑이, 얼굴 및 체간의 모발은 많은 영향을 받는다. 태아는 부드럽고 섬세하고 엷은 색의 털로 덮여 있으며 이런 털을 배냇솜털(lanugo hair)라 한다. 젊은이나 성인의 많은 부위에 있는 섬세한 털을 솜털(vellus hair)라 하며 길고 굵고 색이 짙은 모발을 종말털(terminal hair)라 한다. 인간에서의 모발은 생명에 관계되는 중요한 생리적 기능은 없으나 성적 매력을 지니는 중요한 신체 장식이다. 이 외에 자외선 차단, 마찰 감소 등에 도움이 된다. |
